Deformed leaves?

These are Sour Jealousy autos from FastBuds. Planted 2 of them. One of them has these weird looking deformed leaves? Tried to find as much info as I can online but nothing definitive. They first sprouted on 2nd February so are 11 days above ground at the time of the pictures. They had a dome over them for the first 8 or 9 days, with the vent open. What can cause this and how can I fix it?

Two photos of the deformed little guy and one photo of the normal one

Honestly don’t look too good. Maybe it was just a bad bean. Maybe they will send a replacement? Worth asking

Thanks, I had thought this but at least one of the newer leaves is starting to look normal imo. I’d heard of others saying they ‘grow out of it’ but can’t be sure they had the same issue. It’s been hard to find info on

That mutation is called variegation and it’s fairly common. Not desirable at all.

I planted another in the same pot and as soon as the first true leaves started growing, they’ve started doing this too. So it makes me think it must be something nute related. However all pots are all in the same coco/perlite mix 3/1 and have been receiving the same very low level of nutes

That’s nothing nutritional. Variegation is genetic.

Yup. You got a mutant. W the amount of undocumented work put into their autos and who even knows how fast buds is making their autos. But that’s a mutant . Could be good weed. But that plant will always look fucked up. Some of the most unique flower structures and terp profiles have come off of mutant plants. Only you can make that call if it’s worth growing thru or yanking it now. If it’s stunted and a slow grower, that will probably be the way it grows throughout the harvest. I’d grow it out. Lots of ppl would rather pull it out and plant another auto bean in the same pot. Message fastbuds, they have been known to help individual growers out with issues like this. If you’re in Canada I can send you some autos to play with, as I know I have some in the vault and I don’t play with autos.

Thanks I’ll message them then. Unfortunately I’m in a land of prohibition, not Canada, but thanks a lot for the offer

Run that mutant. Grab another pot and pop another if you want. Options.

Thanks I think I will run it – it seems like most people think it will still grow fine eventually? I’ve also messaged FastBuds so let’s see what they come back with

Update: no reply from FastBuds yet. However, see attached photos – I had a backup seed that was a few days behind in the same pot and it’s now showing the same leaf deformities.

Photo of bigger plant is Mutie 1 that I made the post about. Photo of the smaller plant is Mutie 2 (backup seed).

This makes me think this can’t be some genetic deficiency and must be some kind of nute burn or maybe nutrient block? Some issue with this particular pot of soil. For context – it’s in a 4×4 with 3 other same size pots. It’s one of 2 x Sour Jealousy Auto and there are also 2 x Orange Sherbert Auto. Other 3 pots are not showing defects but this pot is – both the original seed in it and the backup seed.

Honestly, I think you’re a little early to call it quits on this one (two) beans. My experience is that a fair portion of the time, those weird mutants resolve themselves by the 3rd or 4th node and grow fine from there.

That said, there’s always a possibility you could just develop a whole plant of those variegated leaves which for general houseplants is desirable and “pretty” but generally with cannabis it would stunt the growth as any “white” areas lack chlorophyll meaning negligible photosynthesis in those spots. No photosynthesis equals poor trichome/cannabinoid/terpene/flavonoid production so this would not be a desirable trait if it doesn’t resolve itself in a week.

UPDATE – the photos kinda speak for themselves. She’s the closest to the camera, on the left. About 2.5 weeks after the original post (maybe 2 weeks ago now), she stopped growing the weird leaves and she’s thriving. No reply from FastBuds in the end, but respect to those that helped and especially those that said keep going 💪

PS – this is only my second grow so any feedback would be awesome. Setup is 4×4, 10 gallon pots, Mars Hydro FC-E4800 (480W), Coco with inorganics, left: Sour Jealousy Autos (FastBuds), right: Orange Sherbet autos (FastBuds).

Yes, I have trained them quite aggressively for autos! But so far I’m happy with how full the canopy is and plan to switch to photos next so wanted to get practice in with training
