Germination issue’s

I’ve been having an issue with my seeds when I germinate for the last 4 months. The seeds pop but the tap root circles back around to just under the seed and stays there until it dies in the pot. When I check out what happened that tap root is still in the exact same place only a bit bigger with a small root bundle beginning to develop. I’ve asked the breeder but only get environment not their genetics also that they don’t give grow advice. Surprised the hell out of me, I didn’t know I was seeking grow advice in the first place. Once I’ve got it in the pot and it’s made it 2 to 3 weeks it’s all but harvested from there. Anyone else had such issues, just weird looking once the tap root begins to come out. I’d love to know if maybe I’ve got my CannaKan too warm or what? Not much else it could be. Thanks for any input.

Tap roots expect to form straight down. If they can’t form straight down, they’ll twist and curl. This is not helpful. I’d bet that gimmicky shit you’re using is the issue. Seedlings need very little if they’re viable. Not all seeds are viable, even ones that pop. If the tap root stalls development it’s from stress or bad genetics. Tap roots want a dark, moist but not saturated environment. Little to no nutrition is required for the first 10 days. They need more intense lighting than a clone but less than a fully developed adult. Closer the better to prevent stretch. Temps around 80F with RH around 65%.

Im discovering that cannabis growing is similar to most hobbies Ive gotten into; theres a pile of gimmicky shit to distract from the inherent qualities that attracted me to the hobby in the first place.

Your hanging germination advise would be great for this mystro

This works only if you have all the seeds lined up the same direction otherwise they have to do a small loop over themselves if they are upside down. This has been my experience

I have only done it 1 time. No direction on my seeds, didnt have this happen. Are you sure your seed stayed in place and didnt roll once it cracked open? Even if the tap came out the top it would turn past the seed and go downward. If its looping your seed changed direction in the process.

The seeds stayed in place, yes.

As Soup mentions below in his comment, “pointy end up”.

This detail may or may not be a factor in the outcome of the seedling from a seed germinated by the hanging paper towel method. Im not an expert.

I do know from my gardening experience that bulbs such as Daffodil/ Tulip, etc planted upside down do not perform as well since they use up some of their energy to get back to right side up before breaking through the soil.

To clarify, the sprout wouldnt ‘circle’ but emerges from the top then has to bend itself over to move downwards.

Ok, i misunderstood that part of its form. I can agree with the other stuff, using energy to get the right direction and such.

    Could also be old seeds.

I bet it’s too much heat. Dont let your media get a ove 75° if your using any source to heat the media. Once they sprout, lose the heat mat. Or just lose the heat mat and have good temps like 75-80 and keep the seeds off the ground. Little air space underneath helps

Good thoughts and advice from the commenters.

Ive had trouble germinating seeds and it always seems to be a mystery why they have trouble. And sometimes its a breeze…

    So many factors to consider.

Id suggest trying a few different methods with the same pack of beans and see what works for you.

I recommend starting seeds in rapid rooters or another brand of cloning cubes. Soak the seeds and rooting cubes for an hour or so in room temp water with a pinch of Recharge . Then gently push the seed (pointy side up) about a 1/2 inch into the little hole on the rapid rooter. Put the rapid rooters in a tray under a veg light in your veg room and check them every 12 or so hrs. If the root cubes start to change to a lighter color they are getting too dry and should be briefly submerged to rehydrate them. Seedlings should emerge from the cubes within 3-5 days. Once you see the tap root coming out the bottom of the cube and a little plant coming out the top, its time to transplant into a small pot or solo cup fuill of media

I like this method specifically because it helps the seedling orient itself and acclimate quickly to the veg environment. Helps avoid issues like weird tap root behavior.

I still struggle with seedlings in certain circumstances. My issues have been most commonly related to over watering, improper ph, or an otherwise unhealthy media.
