Lights

  • Posted by madman960 on May 5, 2025 at 4:12 am

I want to start a grow channel. The LED lights I have are 8 years old with minimal use and still work great. However, they are heavy and the company is no longer in business. I have a 1500 watt full spectrum with individual multi color LEDs and it puts off the pink hue. Plants did really well with it. Also have an 1800 watt Cobb full spectrum with white light. CRX Sunny is the brand.

What would be a good LED for Autos and for photos? Probably over thinking things here but I feel photos would do better with a stronger light as I prefer to veg longer than most.

The last bit of your question, if you use dli then it would make sense that it’s the opposite way round..auto need/can do with less light intensity as they are in light period for longer..but that doesn’t mean in practice that’s true. Don’t see why what type of light would make a difference between photo and auto

With a longer veg cycle for the photos, 8-10 weeks from sprouting, should have more foliage. More foliage, more light is needed. That’s my reasoning anyway. I don’t know what DLI is. Stronger lights for photos should make up for my lack of knowledge with training. At least that’s what I am hoping.

Blurple / Spiderman lights aren’t full spectrum as they don’t have green light, just blue and red. Doesn’t mean they don’t work but it’s older tech and it’s difficult to identify issues if you can’t see your plants properly. White light is what is referred to as full spectrum but I think thats a bit of a misnomer too.

Hang ’em high and try to get a ppfd reading so you can figure out your DLI.

I understand the light is old tech. Doesn’t take long like it did growing up. I remember computers being outdated every 90 days or so. LOL. I don’t know what DLI is nor do I have tools for measuring light intensity. I grew massive plants with this light and chopped them when they all turned out male. Stalks were about as thick as a banana.

Googled DLI and no idea how to measure it. Light runs 24/7. I can’t find any of my timers so I need to go buy some this week. I used to have them shut off for 15 minutes every 4 hours as recommended by the manufacturer to prolong the life. Lights have been stored for years.

Download the PPFD meter app, or the photone app

Thanks. PPFD at the tallest plant is 200 and shortest is 145. Measured at the top of the plants.

Which one did you use? Just make sure you’ve got it on the right setting if it’s photone..and if ppfd meter that you’ve set it up

It was the PPFD meter. I have to measure the light distance but guessing about 24 inches above the tallest plant. I currently cannot raise the light. These will be going outside next week as long as the transplants were successful.

Did you change the ‘source’ to the right type of light?

At the start screen click information and scroll.down to ‘source selection explained’.

If you don’t set it up correctly the readings will just be nonsense! Lol

              I chose PPFD & DLI.

At the home screen of the app it says ‘information’ as the first option..click it and then go through the circled tutorial if you haven’t already.. I personnaly would go through ALL the tutorials… I can’t walk through all of it with you 🤣

Lol. Thanks. I wouldn’t expect you to go through it all with me.

🤣 photone might be easier to use, I don’t find it quite as accurate but is is more user friendly

Take your time and do it properly..As said before if you don’t set the source up properly the PPFD will be nonsense, and if you don’t set hours of light, then the dli will be nonsense.

              Calm 😂

Light is 22 inches from the tallest plant and 30 inches from the shortest. These are measured from the top of the plant.

Get a light for your coverage area and clearance height. Most new led for the coverage area will work. Some have more red than others, but mostly all still full spectrum. I run hlg scorpion diablo for a 7×7 area, and 7 foot ceiling height. Works for anything i grow under it in that area. Your height and power will factor results.

My closet is 2 ft deep, 7 ft long, and 9-10 ft high. I have to take out the shelf and add a bar near the top so I can raise or lower my light. I have 2 of these closets in my grow room.

I would run it like dual 2×4. 2 sectors basically. 2 leds about 200-250 watts each. I like the hlg diablo x 225. If you want to blow it away the highgrove cypress evo 3 is 330watts. But any that size have that 2×4 pattern. Your middle will overlap and feed off each one fine. Many brands out there, all matters your budget.

Old lights will work. I would suggest downloading the photon app for ur phone to adjust intensity. I assume there is no dimmer on ur light, so you have to adjust by adjusting ur height from ur canope. I would also suggest exammining ur plants with a white light with the blurple off to better inspect ur girls. #1 get a better l;ight when u can.
