Poppin’ seeds, shot glass start

Why do some growers promote keeping the seeds in the shot glass until they sink?

My thinking is that once sunk they are starved of oxygen. Why would this be recommended? If sunken for too long, they drown.

I float them for 12 to 18 hrs, 24hr max. whether sink or float. I then move them to a damp paper towel until sprouting. From there I move them into 3.5″ nursery containers. I dont use solo cups as they tip over way too easily.

what are some of your experiences with the performance of sunken seeds?

Seeds sink when their shell has softened/cracked to the point of letting moisture in causing the seed to lose buoyancy. They won’t ‘drown’ with enough oxygen in the water. I’ve seen plenty of seedlings come out of their shells in a cup of water.

well.. the seeds are pretty much self reliant for 4-5 days after popping…you dont want them to miss out on anything, but remember them sprouts grown for food, theyre gonna be fine for a few days with just water..so all these great tricks used to make sure you dont lose that prised seed when you mess with it to make it germ...well its a load of friendly crap...iv pushed seeds in a pot next to a large plant and seen it germ under 70 F. i have done the same outdoors in agg. zone 3-B in late june to see it go…aside from them volunteers i`v seen 3 in so many decades….much love…lost my thread of ideas…but we be lovin it.

Make sure if you use peroxide to keep it at 1% max. It usually comes in 3%. So 1 part peroxide to 2 parts water.

I always eyeball the hydrogen pyroxide and never have issues with germination. All seeds germinated and broke soil. I killed one after it popped by taking the plastic bottle aka humidity dome off a day or two early. I was pressed for time with visits to urgent care and wound care. Monday and Tuesday I get chemo but at this point I’m starting watering seedlings with a spray bottle. The whole month since my last appointments has been a hassle.

Outside weather is supposed to get warmer and wetter tonight. The cold snap after I started this run has the furnace dying out the lung room. I’m fighting that and hopefully two days of rain starting tonight will make it easier to keep up.

I look at seedlings as a necessary pain in the ass. They’re like someone about to have a kid and I sweat it out until they break soil. Then I’m so happy that I want to hand out cigars.

Next comes hovering over them with a spray bottle like newborns. I’m happy when they no longer need that kind of attention and I can get on with the growing.

People can do theirs however they want, I didn’t pay for their seeds. I’ve done cubes under a dome and T5, solo cups under a dome and T5. One gallons under the T5 with plastic bottles with the top cut off as domes and autos directly into final pots in the tent under LED. It all worked with minimal problems.

This latest attempt to start some auto seeds is at about 50% success. They all germinated but one died after breaking ground. Grandaddy Purple is doing great, one Blackberry made it. Replaced the one that didn’t survive with another but didn’t write it down (brain fade) and the other is a Banana Purple Punch.

One of my lesions from lymphoma ulcerated and had had me going to urgent care and would dressing. Chemo Monday and Tuesday and the hip was so raw last week I could barely carry a jug of water to the lung room. Seedlings need to be watched closely and the health setbacks knocked me off my game. I had to take antibiotics and dress the wound every day. Too many distractions to see to it that they made it. I don’t have a substitute for when I’m under the weather. My wife says that is my thing and doesn’t partake or work in the garden.

Can’t trouble shoot my grow problem this time because it was my own damn fault.

I usually do the paper towel with a touch of recharge water in a sandwich bag. Good results usually about 80% success within 3 days. But this time I tried putting seeds directly into root riot plugs directly into the pot with a touch of recharge. Toped with a small clear dome in the veg tent at 80 degrees. 100% success in 48 hours i had tiny plants. I’m going to try this a few more times. I may have just got lucky.

It’s cheaper than a piece of coffee filter in a tea strainer in a plastic box on a heating mat but the heating mat is the only thing I’d recommend whatever method you’re using. shot glass, paper towel no real difference to me
