transplant to 5 or 7 gal pots

I will be flipping plants into flower in about 2 weeks and wondering if 7 gal pots will be a waste of soil versus using 5 gal pots? They are currently in a 3×3 in 2.5 gal pots and 2 to 3 months old, so if I flip them to flower in 10 days will the root zone grow enough for a decent ROI on the soil? I know bigger roots grows bigger fruits, but will the roots even grow and reach that far out or will the soil remain unused? Moving the plants into my 5×5 after their transplant. Thanks for any advice 🙏🏽

depends on room underneath and how long you will be vegging for .. if your going to flower in two weeks i wouldn’t transplant , just leave them in those pots

Personally I’d take the plunge and go for the 7’s. Slightly bigger pots won’t cost you much more to setup and potentially offer a lot of benefit. Roots will keep growing even after the flip, so the plants should have no problem making use of the extra root space. I also really like the shape of 7gal pots vs 5gals. The extra width is nice and should help your plants spread more horizontally and fill in the space better. I’ve used tons of different pots over the years and for some reason the 7 gal plastic pots are still my favorites and the ones I’ve used the most!

Also… this is an interesting topic! I’m going to put this on the WHEEL OF GROW TALK so it will come up as a discussion topic on a future episode of the 420 HAPPY HOUR, a show we do live on youtube every Friday! Thanks for sharing and come hang out if you wanna hear us chat about it!! https://www.youtube.com/@DGCHappyHour/streams

Yeah I took that route after looking at how little the roots could actually expand in a 5 gallon. Transplanting the girls this weekend and have them acclimated to their final homes before flipping to flower.

It looks like you may have around 12 plants? It will be very hard to fit 12 5 or even 7 gallon pots in a 3×3. The crowdedness might result in loss of yield. I would keep them in the pots they are in, and focus on defoliation and bud sites getting light, as well as under canopy air flow. Your plants look great right now! Just keep them happy.

It’s 9 plants in the tent now, but I will end up defoliating 2 or maybe 3 more times before its all said and done.
