Good people, when picking up a young plant in a pot to check the weight to see if it needs watering, what percentage of the overall weight is the actual plant (and roots)?

That’s a question that only you will be able to answer from weighing the plant. We can’t tell how big the root mass is from pictures, and I’m sure every cultivar is different.

I believe the sweet spot moisture ranges are 30%-50%. I just use a moisture meter.

I grow in soil, which is really easy to overwater. It’s fine to let the soil dry out a fair amount over the course of growing to allow the soil biology to cycle correctly .

You can try it – let one dry out almost to the point of the plant wilting. With a young plant in a ~5-10L pot it should days or weeks to reach that point if it is quite heavy/wet now. The pot and soil will become very light weight. The plant will still remain turgid and then suddenly start to wilt and will become super light. It can be hard to re-wet soil this dry so I’m just saying this to tell you about the limits / how dry is bone-dry.

This all happens much quicker in coco – so be on the ball!

You just have to get a feel to the relative differences in weight when heaving your pots about. Err on the side of dry if you’re not sure. When they grow up the wet/dry cycles will happen much quicker and be much more obvious.
