What size pots?
Posted by potninja on December 11, 2024 at 7:15 amI am currently running 5 gal Rain Science pots with straight canna coco in my 4×4. (The Canna rep at DGC is who steered me away from adding perlite or vermiculite)
I currently water every other day and each plant is getting about a gallon and a half with overwater. I feel like my coco is staying a little too wet and would like to get to more of a daily watering cycle. Would backing down to 3 gallon pots be the right thing to do?

Less watering. Feel the weight of the bucket when watered. Water again when half the weight. Learn to watch the color of your coco. What color is it when half the weight. Soon you’ll be able to eye ball it.
Good luck
Happy grow

Thanks for the response. I understand the watering concept but I would like to decrease the interval. Right now, it’s every 2-3 days in 5 gal pots. If I decrease the pot size, wouldn’t that mean a shorter dry/watering cycle?

I use 5 and 7 gal pots. I water every three days but only used a third the water you’re using. Each plant gets 64 oz. Or two Wendy’s cups lol

Adding perlite at 30% will help with drying out. Is your temps low is why its not drying back properly?

thats too low brother. Thats why your not getting the dry back. I suggest 78-82 range to get those to dry back more. Or like I said, add perlite to your mix if you just cant fix the environment.

Anytime! Hope it turns out dumb fire for ya ✌

I would suggest 76 – 80 F for plants well out of the seedling stage.

Yeah, looking like I need to boost my temps. My tent are in a (heated) pole shed in MN. Low 70s are achievable but 80 starts to really use a lot more energy

Yes, backing down to a 3 gallon would result in you having to water more frequently, and with proper environment they would air out faster than a 5 gallon. In my experience, I find myself watering 3 gallon pots every 3 to 4 days in veg and every other day in flower.

That’s what I am thinking. Ordered some 3 gal Rain Science bags today. Thanks!

When watering you should be able to visably observe the water be absorbed down into the medium. Use perlite or thoroughly washed vermiculite to help lose up the mixture and allow more air.

I personally hand water 2 to 3 times per day. What has help the pots dry out faster is plenty of moving air inside the tent. The medium mixture should be able to fully dry out in 6 – 8 hours. Also make sure youvare pulling un a fresh air supply from yourblung room.

Get real buckets I went away for 18 days came back no issue still had water. Fill perlite at the bottom 50/50 coco/peat and grow dots Bing Bong!

That’s a legit approach but not sure it’s my style. Right now I have a pretty good wake & bake routine going. Spending the first hour of my day mixing nutes, drinking coffee, and staring at the ladies is total zen!

There are manyways to adjust your watering schedule; Smaller pot, less water at each watering, higher temps, air circulation, more aireation, Blumats, etc. You should adjust your watering practices to match your grow style. I’ve used everything from coco, to super soils, sippers, sub irrigation. I have settled on organic living soil in a sub irrigated planter, (Earth Box).
Just try a gallon instead of 1.5. I think I rarely fed more than a gallon a day. Rain Science bags are designed to hold more water in the top of your soil because of the liner.
