For kids: strawberries will be solid with the runners too.
Tomatoes: check out Tiny Tim or similar dwarf.
I’ve done bush beans, pole beans and peas got out of hand.
My kids enjoy the ornamentals too: Teddy Bear sunflower stays nice and small.
Under the strawberries, you could also plant gladiola bulbs. Those grow straight up with minor spread.
Radishes are quick so you could get continual harvest and replanting… Always nice to harvest with kids.
I did an ornamental hot pepper plant. They grow compact like a bush and the peppers look like multicolored Christmas lights.
Chives in a container.
We have some prairie grass near our house, so we grew orange butterfly milkweed and transplanted them to help the butterflies.
