Best options for time relase CalMag

I’m running 3.9gal autopots with Coco and GrowDots and love them, but the original goal of a water-only low touch (once every couple weeks) has remained elusive as I still have to supplement Cal-Mag. To minimize any issues with the autopot valves with the long interval between physical checks of the grow I want to avoid adding any nutrients to reservoirs.

Chat GPT suggests a mix of dolomite lime + gypsum, which may warrant some tests in the future, but I would love to know the DGC’s experience and if they have come up with a good water only solution for coco.

In the same vein as Grow Dots themselves, ICL Osmocote also offers a CalMag time release, which would be perfect if it wasn’t for the N (10-0-0) which I fear would burn the plants with the high rates of GrowDots I have seen success with (10-15g/gal) :https://icl-growingsolutions.com/ornamental-horticulture/products/osmocote-start-calmag-3/

    What say you DGC?

More Chat GPT suggestion re: Osmocote

Grow Dots: 10-15g per gallon (depending on strain & growth phase)

Osmocote Cal Mag: 5-7g per gallon (start with 5g, increase if needed)

This should provide complete nutrition without requiring liquid supplementation!

Never supplement calcium or magnesium unless the plant is actively showing a deficiency. I wouldn’t suggest using any slow release calcium sources like dolomite lime or gypsum because of how alkaline they are. They’ll also cause calcium antagonisms with other elements. Soils with organic amendments that slowly break down through microbial action are better suited for carbon based sources like calcium that are alkaline as they have acidic buffers.

Unfortunately, I’ve been running into interveinal chlorosis and spotting every run so far, and have been barely able to keep up (if at all).

Very much appreciate your comments on the possible alkininity issues, you probably just saved me a lot of heartache.

Put cal-mag or Epsom salts in the reservoir. There is no reason not to.

I run my well water through reverse osmosis that strips calcium and magnesium from my water. Botanicare recommends 3-5 m/l and my plants want the whole 5 m/l.

What is your water source? New growers look at comments like yours and don’t realize that different sources of water require different things. You don’t say anything about your water source and half of this country has well water. I figured out how to grow by watching videos and not knowing the differences in water sources or the importance of replacing Cal-mag in RO water. One size does not fit all and comments that suggest otherwise cause confusion and end up costing people money.

Using RO as your water source may require mineral supplements depending on your water source and nutrient line. Unless your well is over 250 PPM, there’s no reason to filter out the calcium just to supplement more calcium. Even if it is, there’s still no reason to buy cal-mag most of the time when you can cut your well water with RO to get an acceptable PPM.

You must be a clairvoyant if you can snap your fingers and know everything about a well and garden in east central Minnesota. I grow great cannabis organically doing exactly what I’m doing. People have recommended changes in online discussions that damn near dialed me out and ruined a whole run.

It ain’t broke so don’t try to fix anything. I could respond by telling you a bunch of ppm readings of my RO but this garden has been productive for two years and going. My well water gets stripped pretty close to zero ppm by the RO. Are you guessing or do you actually use an RO to filter your well water?

I agree with @jmystro . I had my water tested by culligan when I got my whole house system. They will come out and do that for free. I have about 125ppm of stuff. Mostly manganese, calcium, magnesium and iron. So I only use RO for my humidifier. It’s worked out real good for me. So I would recommend getting a test done. It tells whats exactly in your water and how much.

I would rather keep RO’ing my well water and start with a clean slate. That is what I have done for the past two years and my garden is happy with the results.
