To Super Crop or Not to Super Crop

  • To Super Crop or Not to Super Crop

I was perusing the older posts and came up with a question I hadn’t seen so far. (Unless I overlooked it, which is a distinct possibility)

Super Cropping yea or nah? And why or why not?

Training and shaping a plant to your will is done with timing. You’re only limited by your imagination and space.

I don’t plan to supercrop, it just happens 😅

the first time it happened I almost cried until I realised I’d just supercropped. since I was already in flower I didn’t gain anything but knowledge but I didn’t lose anything either. give it a try and see if it works for you

I learned by accident. Coband is our friend. Talking about this makes me want to some bamboo bonsai torture to a few clones just to see what I can get and what they’ll actually take.

I just did it this morning to my PalomaNights and my lemon cherry auto. Started running out of room and my auto was 2” up in my light. Only way to avoid it was to alter my setup which I really didn’t want to do. Do a branch and get it out of your system. Mine did amazing today already shooting towards the light. They were happy, watered and fed so it all worked out. Happy plants you can definitely get a little rough. The pinch twist🫰 will definitely take some getting used to.

I top mine then create cages around them using bamboo poles and plant wire. These are Trainwreck autos that I cropped, lolipopped and defoliated. I purposely grow small plants that are easy to work on. Every plant gets a slightly different variation depending on what it’s doing.

I put them on wheeled stands in the 3×3 and can reach into the 2×4 easily. Various size buckets are sometimes used to even out the canopy on different sized plants. These plants finished in December and are all bagged and cured.

The one on the left in a five gallon was a clone of a White Widow XXL photo. The others are all autoflowers.

Some people avoid cropping and defoliation on autos. I thrive on it and treat them like any other plant. The trick is to take a little at a time and watch how the plant is reacting. I try to top around day 21 only once.

For outdoor photoperiods I recommend you supercrop (pinch and twist between two nodes to flatter the stem walls without pinching the piece off). This is done to avoid a single cola Xmas tree. Adding silica helps strengthen the stems and makes it a bit harder to supercrop. I do this every other node in veg and it creates a nice large bush with lots of bud sites and helps to minimize overall height. I save topping until just before flowering.
