clones
Posted by madman960 on May 2, 2025 at 7:33 amFirst time with clones. Also relatively new to growing. I have had my 6 plants for 8 days. I don’t have much info on them. Basically just now the strains and that’s all. I have 2 each of OG Kush, Pink Kush, and Honey Cream. They are in red solo cups. I am in the process of mixing my own soil. Going for a hybrid mix of super soil and living soil. It will be a few more days before its ready as I need to bring the ph down another point, point and a half. I need to get another reading today before adding anything else.
I believe the plants are in coco. What would be the best way to get them ready for the soil? Im thinking I should fill my pots 2/3 with my soil mix, add mycorrizal, and top off with plain topsoil. Add clones to the top soil and let the roots work down into the hybrid soil.
Thoughts?

I’m growing a honey cream too. It smells so good… You’re gonna love it!!

Both mine are really short yet. Much shorter and smaller than my kush plants. Not sure how long I want to veg for. Probably 5-6 more weeks minimum. How are yours looking?
-
-
I’ll get a picture for you here soon. I like my plants to be 2 to 3 feet so short is good to me. Check your DLI and spectrum if you want em to stretch some more.
-
Remember some strains react differently to different lighting.

I have only had them 8 days. I don’t know when they were taken or anything. They are in small solo cups. I’m going to transplant on Sunday. Hopefully the fresh nutes will spring them into action. My Kush are longer but skinny in my opinion. Not certain as I am new.

I believe the main culprit for transplant shock is a sudden change in EC. So do a little run off test on your soil when you wet it down pre transplant. If it’s not super high, which some freshly mixed soils can be, I’d just go ahead and transplant it. Get some soil above the coco too so that doesn’t dry out too quickly. Hit em with a bit of Recharge or whatever microbe product you have handy to assist transition and Bob’s your uncle.

I just saw your other post. 1.9 is probably fine, as long as it’s similar the what they’re sitting in now. If they’re in plain Coco getting 1.2 there might be some shock. So bring that up a little bit each watering until they’re closer.
-
1.9 is probably scary for some. I had researched the numbers but don’t recall them off the top of my head, but 1.9 was in range. I prefer to start high and work low. I’m still waiting to hear if they’re in coco. I believe they are as I get a PH reading of zero. I don’t have any plant food on hand as I was planning on just watering. Should I get some fox farm or something? I want to transplant in 2 days but I don’t want to kill my plants either. I do have some banana peel water. I already gave each plant a small amount a few days ago.
-
I’m in living soil so I don’t monitor my pH and EC as much as some. I probably won’t be any help with recommending brands but others will, I think all big brands are serviceable. 0 pH is impossible so something’s up with that.

This is my goal as well. I like to keep detailed notes so I can figure out what works and what doesn’t. I have a good bit of tools so I may as well use them. I don’t have a par meter. Don’t really think it is necessary. In the process of building my own grow spaces. I use 2x4s, black out curtains and mylar. Costs roughly the same as the cheap grow tents, but I can configure to my space better.

I think maybe you’re over thinking it. Not bad, but indecision might be worse than what you fear from transplant. Those big ones will want to be up potted asap. Have you got drainage holes in those cups?

I’m transplanting tomorrow. When they were dropped off, I was told not to transplant for 2-3 weeks. I know growing from seed you transplant when the leaves grow past the pot. I don’t know when you should transplant clones.

I have said several times that I would transplant on Sunday. That hasn’t changed. Just wanted some additional information and advice first. Probably am over thinking it. I have grown many different things from seed. Don’t know much about working with clones. I was told not to transplant for 2-3 weeks when they were dropped off. They came from a friend of a friend so I don’t have direct access to the original grower.

All good brother. Once you get a few grows under your belt it’ll all start to come together.

Thanks. I transplanted my 2 OG Kush around 7 pm last night. The taller one was kind of droopy after. It’s currently standing back up straight so hoping it went well. Soil ph was 7.2 so I used 5.8 ph water. Getting ready to transplant the other 4 now, just procrastinating. The plants came in 2 different size solo cups so that doesn’t help when you’re new. The Honey Cream are much smaller than the other 4 plants. They’re getting transplanted regardless.

But maybe I’ll be even more direct on purpose…

See now If I had used this
..that would have indicated clear annoyance at the dithering
Pretty easy to decipher haha

It’s all good. I’m trying to learn about clones. I transplanted my two OG Kush last night. I found some wire trash baskets at the dollar store. Lined the inside with landscape fabric. Put some gravel in the bottoms and filled with soil. Made hole for plant and added some myocorrizae. Put plants in top dressed with more myocorrizae. Topped off with more soil and gave a healthy watering with 5.8 ph water. Soil ph was 7.2.
Plants are in 2 different size solo cups. The taller plant was 12 inches and in the bigger cup. Going off the roots, it wasn’t quite ready but was close enough. The 2nd plant was in the smaller solo cup and was ready for transplant. My remaining 4 plants are in both size solo cups.
I still don’t know how to tell when clones are ready to transplant. Is it based on time or growth or a combination of the 2 or something else?
-
They’re ready when you’re ready man. There is no perfect time.
-
-
I still need to add gravel to the tops to eliminate potential pest problems.
-
1800w? Thats hectic. What ppfd are you getting? Might be a bit high. I’ve only got 75watts over my seedlings. 730watts dimmed to 60% over my flowering plants.
-
Lol. No idea. I do not have a way to test ppfd. The 1500 puts out the pink hue vs the white light from the 1800 watt cobb. Just finished putting the gravel on my plants. I don’t really see it anymore. 2 inches of gravel or marble etc keeps insects from being able to reproduce in the soil. My understanding is that it does not affect the beneficial microbes or anything but keeps unwanted pests down.
-
There is an app called Photone that will give you a rough idea. Results may vary depending on your phone model and using a paper diffuser is highly recommended.
The white light is probably closer to “full spectrum” but 1800w is a LOT of light. Like a crazy amount for four young clones.
I have no issues with your gravel set up. If it works, it works.

I probably should have added the Winky face myself, just dropping a link could seem a little passive aggressive on it’s own hahaha
