Fem or Auto?
Posted by SmokalottaPOTamus on December 19, 2024 at 7:53 amFor a 1st time grower, would you recommend fem or auto seeds? I know with fem you can let them veg for basically as long as you want…with genetics these days, will a good auto still provide a favorable yield compared to a fem that’s had a longer veg cycle?

Photo Fems, vegg, take clones, keep a main mother but also leads to more other underlying things that can happen. It’s all a learning until you find what you like and fits your needs and schedule or to see if it’s for you or not. Fastbuds has a fast flowering photo. I’ve been wanting to try that one. Mix of both worlds. I don’t know much other than what he talks about on his videos.

Autos are a lot of fun and easy. Photos are much more demanding IMO. Love growing both though!

I just want to go over the terms so you’re clear on what you’re getting.
Auto and Photos are two sides of the same coin, You can have a semi-auto or fast flower but this simply goes into it being a mix of Auto and Photo that the genetics are not stabilized towards auto yet.
Feminized and Regular are the other two sides of the same coin. Feminized means we do something to the plant so the resulting seeds are only female. Regular means we can get male or female from the seeds.
What is it that you want to learn? A lot of people say Autos are for beginners simply because its easier to setup the environment for them. The easy of environmental setup is true but them being for beginners is not. They require you to pay close attention to the plant and do everything when it needs it, You need to listen to the plant and do what it tells you with as little delays as possible because you only have so much time to do that stuff…
With Photo period plants you can make mistakes and give the plant time to recover and do everything on *your* timeline.
I think this makes Autos more difficult but also makes it so they have more to teach you. You must listen to the plant and what it wants to be successful. This is what you must do with most plants and if you get used to running photos only and try to grow some herbs… Its going to be difficult.
But if you understand autos and try to run some herbs, Well those herbs are going to be listened to by the person that is used to doing things when the plants want.
I think running autos takes a certain skill of understanding and learning how to communicate with plants in a way that photos do not.

Thanks a milly for the insight! I definitely understand what you’re saying. I’m leaning towards fem/regular so I can have a little more forgiveness since it’ll be my 1st grow, and the fact I can keep it in veg for as long I deem fit seems like a huge benefit as well!

I think you mean Feminized Photoperiods ;). One thing you need to be aware of is the longer the plant is alive the higher chance of something undesirable happening to the plant. One of the reason autos are nice is that you get a quick turnaround and thus have a less chance of your plant getting sick or infected with pests during a later stage while its taking a while.
I started with auto flower plants because it felt like if I treated the plants well I’d get to harvest with high quality bud in a decent timeframe. It is more difficult to setup a *good* photoperiod environment in my opinion. There is just more things you have to do.
A lot of growing will kind of be a lot of the same choice. Synthetic vs Organics each have their own pros and cons. How much control do you want versus how easy do you want your growing experience? Synthetics are true control over the nutrients the plant is getting but you need to be ready to diagnose a lot and do a lot of work. I wanted it easy so turned to organics, Where I follow a simple feeding schedule. Adjusting it based on what I hear others online are doing as well.
Whether you do a lot and defoliate a bunch of leaves or you use training clips and tie downs. Your type choices in the type of plant you pick and the nutrients you use change your optimal choices. You can do different things with a photo period than you can an auto. On the other side training might happen in early flower on an auto but you wouldn’t dare do that on a photo period, you would do the things you need to do before flipping to flower.

I think I’m gonna read up some more and then decide. Now you’ve got me leaning towards autos because I’d love a quick turnaround. I want to be as involved in the process as much as possible, so I don’t think I’ll be doing any auto watering. Although, I wouldn’t mind using grow dots so I don’t mess up the newts. I definitely want to use coco w/ perlite so I can reuse my media to eliminate the need to dispose of soil. I’m still undecided on what I want to do for additional newts. I’m assuming the pheno I choose will help determine what kind/how much nutrition I’ll be using.

With dry amendments like Gaia Green organics its based on soil mass and nothing to do with Cultivar. I’d think grow dots are similar.

That’s great to know! I wasn’t aware. Much appreciated

What zooms said.
I would add though, autos help you learn a lot in a very short time. You have to read and react quickly with autos because you’re on a time constraint. They teach you a ton of info in a short span.

Thanks! I think I’m going to do fem/regular for my very 1st grow, and then try an auto on my 2nd or 3rd grow depending on my results and confidence.

Autos are nice because of the turn around. They have come a long way. However the inconveniences and the fact you can’t keep them around for as long as you may want can be a turn off to some. I have grown some bomb autos. My favorite plant I grew this year was an Auto. Granite Haze from Speedrun seeds. Love the buzz the smell taste and yield. . It is an F6 I will be popping more to see if I can find the same pheno for my personal head stash

I’m completely new to growing, but have been a cannabis enthusiast since 16(now 32). I have the slightest clue about genetics, but would you be able to explain to a newbie about the “F” type seeds? Isn’t an F1 where pollen from the male pollinates a female plant? In short, generations of the mother strain? The higher the #, the more generations, is that correct? And then you can back cross to increase vitality?

Photo. If you mess up an auto at any time in its life it will surely hurt your yield. If your photo period plant is unhealthy, just keep it in veg till you figure it out.
