Popping beans! “Bag seed” pheno hunt. Worth it?

So, I have a few ideas about starting a pheno hunt. I have quite a few seeds from a few runs ago where one of my rooms full of clones(ordered online), about 4 strains, was seriously neglected and hermed, however, I waited and harvested some decent seeded bud… yada yada yada…I had a lot of seeds that I saved. I know there was jelly breath, trainwreck, alien og, blue cookies, etc.

I had a lot going on in my life at the time so no idea what plant I actually got the seeds from if not all of them. Threw them in a bag and now I am curious about popping a few and pheno hunting.

Is it worth starting these seeds, knowing they came from a hermaphroditic plant, or was pollinated by one. Plan is to start them, clone them, send the one I took a clone from into flower, harvest, test bud, keep or toss the clone. Then the question is… if I find a keeper killer cut… not knowing the parental genetics can I just name it whatever I want?

I guess the main question is… are “bag seeds” or random single seeds that come out of a plant I’ve personally grown worth growing? I just found a seed in the last 420 FastBuds Green Crack Auto I grew, and a couple seeds out of the last Strawberry Cheesecake Auto from seedsman. They were both a little stressed and I found a couple pollen sacks on each of them when harvesting. Was thinking about popping those as well.

    Thanks for the input!

Those seeds probably carried that herm genetic with them.

That’s kind of what I thought… but wouldn’t that mean the clones I had from a reputable source already had herm traits too? Do all plant’s have hermaphroditic traits if they can all pop nanners under stress or light leaks? Just curious how sensitive they would be if they were grown in ideal conditions. Just some thoughts I’ve been having. I always think of the legendary strains that came from random seed… We don’t know if that was a herm or cross pollination from a herm plant?

If you grew it yourself I wouldn’t call it a bag seed.

If it was stress induced and a feminized plant the pollen would have been feminized too but will carry the trait so in times of stress it will most likely hermaphrodite again.

It was most likely stress induced due to heat/underwatering/and maybe light leaks. But they were feminized clones… I don’t know if “naturally” feminized seeds from a stress herm plant would be essentially the same as using STS? Or if the seeds from the herm plants will show the traits even when grown in ideal conditions…

Also, I didn’t see nanners on all of the plants in that tent… so some seeds could have been just a healthy female pollinated by another plant that threw out some pollen.

Chemdog was a bag seed, the legend of the 13 beans. That always sticks in my mind.

I’ve got 2 bag seeds going now in amongst the bunch just because incase. I believe most intersex traits happen due to environment but if I ever see any bananas it’s gone. All the best mate 👍

That’s what I think about too… but, the plan would be to pull any that show signs of herming… but. There could be a keeper in there right?

Yeah I pull a strain if it shows signals of herm, one of mine pictured won’t yield much for sure but I’ll let the girl go just to see.

Over the years most of my intersex traits have come because of light. Either lighting leaks in zips etc, my dehumidifier having a tiny light, even the orange light on some extension cables lol. Nightmare

        Learning curve I suppose.

I believe all plants will herm under enough stress. The difference with your situation is it was probably the FIRST to herm that pollinated the crop, not the one you select in the case of spraying STS or something like that. That said, you might be fine. I say it depends how hard it is to get seeds where you are or if you want to fork out money when you have loads of them already. It’s not guaranteed to produce herm sensitive plants, it’s not off the table either.
