UVB duration during flower
Posted by thrakattak on December 19, 2024 at 5:01 amHey DGC folks!
I’m wondering at what point during flower are you folks turning on the UVB lights? Also, how long are you leaving them on?
I’ve completed one run with the UVB supplemental lights. I turned them on during weeks 6-8 of a 9 week flower period and kept them lighted for 3 hours each day.
What’s y’all’s settings for UVB, if you use them?

Well, it seemed to me like it was the frostiest run I’ve had yet. But, since it was the only time I’ve used UVB, IDK if it was genetics or any number of other variables.

Positive results Nice job.
So in your opinion, was it worth the expense of the light?
-
Definitely worth it for me because growing is also a fun hobby and these Migro fixtures are inexpensive. I also like tweaking and fiddling with everything.

So, are you running it for 6 hours consecutively during flower? Or 30 minutes on/30 minutes off?

You seeing positive results? Happy and keeping it as part of your “recipe”? How did you arrive at that periodicity?

Yes buying another set from mars hydro for my 2nd tent.

I’ll definitely have to consider some UV and IR supplemental lights that run on timers like this.
I personally don’t like IR in the main lights because the SF kit I had came with it built in and more control over it seemed better to control the heat in the environment.

Personally, I run my UV’s 10 minutes each hour during 12 hour light cycle. Giving me a total of 2 hours of UV rays.
I ran the same genetics in two separate 5×5 tents. One running UVs supplements and one with out. I would estimate at least 25% frostyer in the UV setup. Personally , I’m seeing positive reactions out of my plants.

How did you arrive at the “per hour” duration, instead of a solid 2 hours?

On my first run with the UVs I tried running them on the full-time with the lights. And after just a couple days I noticed my plants turning some very cool colors. I thought it was good and the genetics of the seed. Then I noticed my leaves dying off a lot sooner than normal. And the only difference was the UVb’s. So I went in to research mode and realized how the UVBs were actually to intense it was creating the effect.
While setting up another 5×5 with UVs I happen to catch Scotty Real and Dr Busby episode. By going off of a suggestion that they has stated, I set my UVs on a timer to limit the intensity. And the colors came on later into flower but the trichome ripening with more even throughout. It seems like with too much UV I had some trichomes trying to ripen lot sooner than others . I didn’t like when there was 80% clear 5% cloudy and another 15% Amber already . By setting it on a 10 minute an hour timer they’re spot on again.
And I’m definitely not saying my way is 100%. I’m still having fun with the UV spectrum.

And my FYI. I did monitor my leaf temperatures . Which is a lot hotter under the UV lighting . I figured smaller intervals of distress was better compared to the longer .

Good information, thank you. I’ve got an electromechanical timer for the UVB fixtures, and I believe it has 10 min resolution. I’ll try it out.

I’ve done 2-3 hours during flower lights on last half of grow and also 5 minutes every 30 minutes of lights on. The former was ACI recommendation and later was from spider farmer. The 5 on 30 off is very easy with an ACI controller in cycle mode. Both ways I turned them off last week. Both ways they were definitely frostier lol. I’m using the ACI UV lights. Need to try and do side by side all things being equal

I’m just finishing off a run with UV. Yeah, I heard people say only run the UV a short time on but I am sure the sun produces UV all day long so I thought I would try an experiment. I put my UV lights about 10-12 inches above my main light and ran the UV all the time the main lights were on. One pheno did turn leaf color early but the trichromes all looked good, frosty. I will be cutting them down in a couple of days. I’m not advising that method but I do have some frosty buds about to be harvested. I posted pics of the grow in the Dank Buds section last week so you can look at the results. I’m hoping to re-veg the plants and run the UV lights less next grow as a comparison.
