How do you decide when to harvest?
Do you go by pistils, trichomes, fade, smell, calendar—or just your gut?

On this weeks Dude Grows Show, Let’s talk about harvest timing and knowing the perfect time to chop!

How you decide when it’s time to chop?

    • What’s your method for checking ripeness?

    • Do you wait for amber trichs? Are you harvesting clear…

I harvest based upon the goal for the flower. If I’m flowering to press rosin (which is most of the time), I generally take the plant at the first sign of amber. Waiting any longer makes the rosin a bunch darker. For canna-caps (pills) I’ll usually take at 15% amber.

I use trichs as the measure: clear, cloudy, amber, and use one of those cheap…

      • I usually give it a week longer than recommended but once I hit the week of I check the trichomes every night that way I know if I’m harvesting the next morning. Funny thing is I turned my lights off for today and will be harvesting tonight. Have 8 more girls that I put in flower last week that I will be transfered to the big girl tent tomorrow 🙌

        • I try to balance fade and trichomes. I like mine with no amber 90% cloudy at least. But to each their own. I also like a good fade because I believe in the flush! growing with canna a b and additives such as recharge (woop woop) and other things. I like to feel like I’m depleting as much of the nutes from the plant as possible for a smoother…

          • 90/10… 99/1… 80/20.. the missing number here is x and x represents clear.. no one talks about clear. x/x/x so when I’m looking I might see a bunch of cloudy and a little amber.. but a bunch of clear.. if there’s a bunch of clear, let them shift to cloudy even if it means having like 20% amber.. that amber is still gonna do it’s job for you,…

Personally, I am working on getting that gut instinct feeling of when to harvest but currently I am judging it by all faces the pistols, the Tricom, the fade and the smell compared to the calendar. I tried to aim for 15% Amber Tricom But will always settle for them being cloudy and frosted if the plant is showing signs that it needs to come…

Nice work! Banner laid it out for you, and those digital microscopes are the way to go! Very fun to play around with, too!

I have a digital microscope coming tomorrow. Then I’ll get a clearer picture of the trichs,

congrats – looks close! can you zoom in to see if the trichs are clear, cloudy and/or tan? I like to chop when they are cloudy with a little tan. happy harvesting!
