Darkness before harvest

  • I’ve done it both ways and haven’t really noticed a difference however,I had many different variables at play and can’t give an opinion based with facts to back it up

Cannabis alchemy, for sure. Thats why i wanted to see if there were actual numbers. Now, grain of salt, the experiment will have to be done a huge number of times to actually see if those trends are true. But it gives me pause to consider it atleast.

  • In the dark the stomata are closing up. They are not transpiring. They are not moving as much water to uptake nutrients. You are putting the plant in a dormant state doing this. Carbohydrates, your sugars, the starches stored… this is where your oil farming comes into play. Root exudates are going to be a huge role on this.

lets say this is 48 hrs before chop, does moving water and uptaking nutrients really matter? What would explain the video data of slight increase in thc and the changing terp profile? If final stages of senescence has kicked in, would it be up-taking those things to any significant degree anyways?

      • The same thing can be said the other way. Lights on they produce. Do 18/12 last few days to produce more. Lights on, lights off, the sugars, starches all doing different things. If dark is said to do this, why do we use 12hr instead 10? The action that matters is underground in the dark at all times. I always got other issues being left dark so long, never seemed to benefit. Im not trying to argue, i view in natures aspect. Never do they get that outside naturally. Same as more light. I stick 12/12 till harvest, i dont flush, and i water at lights out. so my ways dont always work for others, and not always agreed with. Not saying im right or wrong, but when the plant needs energy to do something, the dark wont bring it.

  • Research circadian rhythm. That day and night is crucial all the way to the end

  • This is an article from 5 years ago. Why am i even in this chat? Science has shown with carbohydrates and development. This arguement is not much better than the cold water flush.

  • I have my environment dialed in. Have tried multiple techniques or theories for light at end of grow. First harvest lights off 48 hours. Result dank af. Got lucky I thought. 2nd time lights normal schedule chop before coming on. Good results. 3rd time ran lights on 48 hrs straight kept temps low and humidity on point. Results meh. It was ok. 4th attempt back to lights off for 48 hrs and the dank is back. It might be bro science but it works for me. But I will be checking out the circadian rhythm study. Always looking to be better.

  • Need to give to get. Extra light to built up those sugars, then at lights out they do their magic. Build them up lights on, then lights out they have enough. If you dont build they have nothing to to last for the extra dark.

  • Im going to try this 18/12 finish. I have done the 48hrs dark. I might not have had what i needed to be a noticable result. Has me curious though

  • I’ve never been sold on the extended dark period, but I’ve always harvested during the dark before the lights come on for the day.

I’ve noticed plants are definitely extra terpy at night and early in the light cycle. I suspect this is because some of the more delicate terps will volitize off during the day under the lights and warmer temps. So my thought is… harvest during the cool dark periods when the ladies are at their maximum terp level and get them right into a dark climate controlled room to start the drying process.

Makes sense. If the chop is imminent, and light and heat volatilize them off, doing it in the dark hours seems advantageous.

  • Gonna give the 18/6 switch a try. Should be a fun test. Been growing for a year and feel like I’m just scratching the surface of what this plant can do.

    • Im talking more a custom time. 18/12. Give them that 18 for photosynthesis to produce those sugars through cellular respiration. Give 12 hours dark for that magic to happen. Yes those are processed in the dark, but you need a full tank first. To much dark you will run empty.

Has anyone seen the Iranian strain that switches to flower at 18/6? I saw a video on these and found it fascinating as I always thought cannabis was either 12/12 or auto flowering..

    • You’re talking about Jade Nectar I think. Very interesting stuff and he’s always raving about the terp profile and high as well.
