Surviving growing while married
Posted by LandOf10000Buds on April 13, 2025 at 3:24 pmHey Folks. I would like to get peoples thoughts on indoor growing and smell. I have learned so much so far from this amazing community. I was speaking with @potninja about smell. I learned that carbon filter doesn’t remove all the smell. Thank @potninja for bring this to my attention. I was ready to start buying. I would like to start growing by the stipulation my wife has is she doesn’t smell it. Could you please provide me with your person experience with smell and how you remediated it for a family member. Thank you!

I exhaust through carbon to outside. Therfore my lung room is always pulling air from my house creating negative pressure. I don’t think there is any smell in the rest of my house but maybe I’ve gone smell blind.

It smells in the lung room, yes. Not strong but if you were blindfolded you’d know something was up I think.
If you have a good quality tent with negative pressure you shouldn’t, in theory, but you’ll still have to unzip it one day, then the smell comes out. You will have to resign to some smell some of the time. Pruning, trimming, drying. It’s a smelly plant. But your house isn’t going to be reeking of dank all the time.
-
That makes sense! The lung room will have some smell during the grow (maintenance, flowering and harvest) but when the tent is closed you can achieve significantly less smell. Does that some it up?

Or do you mean outside where the exhaust goes? It doesn’t smell like fresh air but again, if you stuck your nose into the air you might pick up something recognisable. I plant flowers around there and also keep my worm farms there as masks.

Good carbon filters absolutely should not smell…if you buy cheaper one with thinner walls they do not work as well. Look for extra thick ones (they cost more but will be worth it)…good quality ones should be high airflow as well and bigger in general. Also think about over sizing, say if it’s normal to have 6in airflow, go 8in airflow ie filter, ducting, fan…as then you can run it on lowest setting which will make it farr quieter too. Considering an acoustically insulated fan and ducting as well.

True. I actually have a newer bigger Can-Fan than when I first started so the smell is probably less then I remember when I planted the flowers by the window.
-
wow. awesome. I have never thought about upsizing. I was wondering if an additional carbon filter just for the lung room air would also help. seems logical to me.

The ac carbon filter are only 38mm deep/thick
…you can get much better ones that are 60mm and even 100mm thick they stop all the smell
-
interesting. I will now have to go down the carbon filter rabbit hole
-
And think about running quiet as well like I mentioned lol if growing at home might be a problem… The ac infinity 6in gen2 oscillating fans are nice though

So I’ve actually lived the question your asking over the last 3 yrs.
I’ll try to make this as short as possible and save you marital issues. Unless you buy like a 10 x 10 tent that you can open , get in and close to work. Every time you open it during flower to whatever maintenance, it’s gonna be an issue.
So after 2 yrs if conflict, I “folded” and she regrets it
This is what I had to do to stay married and enjoy my hobby in peace.

. I Love your thinking!! I am so so so trying to start small. It seems hard to do so. Thanks for sharing!

YES!! A detached outbuilding is the best method for removing weed smell from your house.

Sounds like Melon and I have similar setups. You’re up the road from me. If ya can make it down at some point, you can walk around my place and whiff-a-sniff. I run perpetual so it’s an investment in carbon. You can mitigate at our level, for a price but there’s times it’s real freakin’ obvious. Trimming for example. It’s like you’ve opened a giant skunky potpourri barrel and rolled around in it. It’s strain dependent as all hell too. My wife is exceptionally tolerant of the grow but when I pop Thunderfuck or Blueberry beans she raises hell at flip.

You really have this thought out! Can you grow other plants/vegs in the same grow house with cannabis?
Would my tomatoes smell like cannabis?

I have a maximum of four in flower spread between a 4×2 and 3×3. I’ll have some vegging and a mix of autos and photos depending on what I need and how fast I need it. Smell isn’t bad when adhering to plants in flower requirements.
Things that help, don’t grow skunk strains, pick something that doesn’t smell up the house. Keep the lung room door closed, if it gets too bad open the drying tent, crank up the exhaust fan and use it to scrub the room. Every so often carbon filters need to be replaced. If I’m out in the yard by the corner of the house so far I haven’t noticed any odor.
My wife had the same rules in the beginning but doesn’t seem to care anymore. If someone is coming over we break out the incense and air freshener. She doesn’t partake anymore but used to back in the 70’s. It started making her heart race but she sees how much I like growing and goes easy on me.

I am sure when I find the strain that works best for me, it will be the skunk strain. LOL

I got rid of the wife. Problem fixed. Lol
But i do still worry about the smell. I got a cheap ozone machine on Amazon. I use it to “recharge” my carbon filters. I put a fan and the filter in a box with the ozone generator. Works good. Then I run it occasionally every few days in the room outside my lung room. House smells like a hospital. This also is part of my IPM plan.
Now ozone can be harmful to plants so be very careful. That’s why I only use it in the lung room when everything is cleared out and I’m sanitizing the room. Small amounts can kill smell, a little more kills spider mites and too much kills your plants.
-
Interesting. I will look into it. I have ozone generators already. I used to smoke a lot of cigars. Makes sense that you can “recharge” the carbon. Thanks for the tip!

So I vent out of my house run two carbon filters one for each tent then goes out the roof threw a T that both tents connected two and then to a pellet stove chimmy but just try and keep her happy my wife smokes but doesn’t like hash and I love it so guess who’s doing a flower run to keep her happy lol and start small don’t grow monsters more bud more smell
-
It seems like venting outside is key for me. Appreciate the information.

I moved my wife to another bedroom and set up 2- 2×4 tents in MY bedroom. I use 2 AC Infinity inline fans with charcoal filters too control smell. Unless I am fiddling in my tents visitors don’t smell the plants.
-
I am reeferman’s gal and ehile I smoke and do not mind our tent in our rooms, I hear ya. My mom hates the smell. Unless I was smoking with back in the day before retirement I did too. Anyhow he did grow some lemon terps cannameds for us and they smelled great. Maybe you can find a smell she does not mind. I mean I get the smell is metered out by other means but if you grow garlic or lemon or gingery terps, it may mitigate that too…

I’m over powered and over filtered – I’m in a 4×4 Gorilla w/ a 720w/6 bar Sun System LED – I exhaust from the top of my tent directly into an exterior “water heater” carbon filter w/ an 8” CanFan….overkill for sure BUT absolutely zero smell even though I’m in Week 8 of flower w/ a very pungent crop.
