What is the biological purpose of terpenes?

Ive read a couple of things, draw in pollinators, dissuade predators, intermediates that change between different chemicals in the plant, used as a signal to other plants that there are benefits or dangers in the environment or even notifies others that flowering is approaching…..

Just seems like purpose begets understanding, which leads to innovation.

    Anyone have any insights?

  • Terpenes are more than just scent molecules. They’re bioactive compounds not unique to cannabis that form interactions between and within other organisms other than plants including communication, defense, attraction and stress resistance. Nature builds and breaks down compounds in many ways. Some molecules perform a single function (like certain enzymes) while other molecules (like cannabinoids and terpenes) perform multiple functions through chain reactions.

  • Incredible…and as you point out, these compounds aren’t unique to cannabis but what other plants have so many compounds, dozens and dozens of them? It’s my impression that most plants have one or two, a handful maybe while cannabis is a virtual carnival sideshow.
