8 weeks agoAsk a Grow Question @scottyreal I am using real buckets my next run I was wondering how long do you top water before you begin filling the reservoirs? New to this I am just finishing my first run

Awesome! I think you’ll dig them. First fill the inserts with coco and saturate them til runoff with some recharge water (I use a 2 gal watering can w/ a heaping teaspoon of Recharge). Make sure to pack the netpot cup at the bottom by hand and really pack the wet coco into it. Then put the inserts into the buckets, install your plants, and water them til total saturation. Discard (or reuse) any extra Recharge water in the bottom of the container. Then just use the system as directed. You’ll want to top feed some Recharge 1-2 times a week, but just enough to wet the roots (maybe 8-16oz per plant). Other than that, the system should do the rest! Hope this helps.

@scottyreal thanks for posting this! Can you expand a bit on getting new Coco ‘buffered’? What is buffering? Is it a pain in the ass?

Coco’s initial calcium and pH buffer is done for you when buying quality. Plenty of cheap unwashed sea salt coco available. Coconuts harvested by the sea needs to be washed of salts and use calcium nitrate to exchange to sodium with calcium. Canna and other quality coco comes from inland and doesn’t need to be washed of salts. The pH is also buffered to about 6.2 and charged with calcium nitrate. So from the factory, quality coco has a calcium and pH buffer. Once you add minerals, the coco will grab minerals filling the space on a coco particle. This mineral buffer will also have a pH buffer you want to maintain.

@scottyreal thanks brother my current run is coco and dots and recharge they are doing great can’t wait to try the real buckets I got 12 plant buckets and 3 reservoirs upgrading from a 4×4 to a 5×10
