      a day ago (edited)

I want to talk/write about something that I believe is important. This is mostly about cats because I’ve not done the research into what a dog would want to eat as a plant.

The other day there was a post about whether our cats/dogs attack our plants against our wishes. I think its important to discuss one of the main reasons I got into plants. At first it was just kind of about growing my own medicine to see if I could do it.

But one thing I knew was that my cat absolutely loved going outside… I pondered for a long time what it was that she loved about outside so much. I watched her behavior with intense interest and she would munch some grass, But only the big long stuff not the short stuff. A patch of Crab grass oh baby that is what she likes.

I got a couple cat grass kits to see if she would enjoy it. She did a little then got bored with it very fast and the cat grass seemed to die out due to lack of nutrients in the mix they gave. It wasn’t what I was looking for. I’ve tried growing her some catnip and she loves it when I cut a bit off and rub it between my fingers then present it to her. She will bite a leaf sometimes but its rare, Even with catnip.

My first Cannabis plant was a horror show, I didn’t have the light and it was improvisation all the way! The plant was stunted but I tried my best. At one point I had it near my window and Mocha was sitting near it and watching over it, She started freaking out and meowing at it. I thought she was singing to the plant at that point in time but I realize now what she was doing was much smarter than that… Much deeper and in tune than I could have imagined.

She was not singing to the plant but acting as an alarm to me. Get over here, Check on this plant! Its not doing well! Do something about it Dad! She is a special cat for sure and sometimes I have to give her trouble with small plants, She just wants to check on them but she can’t push the dome and head butt it trying to get in there, She is going to knock it over.

Back to the point of the post… If you want to grow Cannabis and have pets. Please consider companion plants not for the purpose of IPM or anything else but make these plants accessible to your pets as a deterrent to them getting into your Cannabis. Give them something that they can be right if they take a bite out of it for fun, Plant some lemon balm, cat mint, catnip, lemon grass to put in front of your Cannabis plants and shield them from your cats.

My cat still likes checking on my Cannabis plant and sometimes I see the corner of a leaf with a hole and the tip is gone and I know Mocha did her thing with a single little nip then walked away. That is her MO. I tend to be able to tell when its her because its always one of the big leaves that are hanging down low. She leaves the strawberries alone. But she enjoys going to the window sill sticking her face in the catnip and just giving it a good sniff, nothing more.

I think she watches me do this with my Cannabis plant and follows suit. I’ve noticed she is attuned to me, Her life revolves around my life. I can feed her but its not time to eat until we eat together. She will abstain until I eat. She watches me like a hawk and always wants to go outside with me when I smoke, She watches me put my bong inside and then runs away from me while staying in the tiny yard or diving through the fence into the neighbors larger yard.

My setup is not ideal at all and I’m not really following all of these practices but I do try to keep plants around that are herbs that I can make herbal infusions with but she can also enjoy. Catnip is in the Mint family of plants if you were not aware and humans can consume it too.

      • Speaking of which I just topped one of the catnip branches that was getting long and gave her the top. She is definitely feeling it 😀

          • @vanilla_growilla_83 They really do just want to be like us. Can’t blame them for wanting to get into our Cannabis if there aren’t plants for them right? You’ve left no options at that point.
