I keep hearing what sounds like a pissed off cat hissing. I look over and my cat is relaxing on her perch. The bug zapper is doing its job well. PSZAP!

      • I’m leaving the bug zappers on over night and they have that dim blue UVA glow. I hear a lot of zaps going on due to it being dark and bugs being attracted to the glow of the zappers.

For some reason the Box Elder beetles are attracted to the AeroGarden Sprout lights and a few were just chilling on top. Cool makes it easy to knock you off to my electric fly swatter *zap zap*.

These are powerful tools but the handheld one isn’t as useful for the grow. It was vital for when I was getting wasps in my place constantly, I don’t know how I’d have dealt with 10-15 wasps a day without an electric fly swatter to fry their pheromones and prevent them from calling their friends into my home to come after me.

I’d toss them outside and the ants would have a meal out there.

        • I wonder how the UVA glow over night is going to affect growth if at all. It is very dim but must do something for the plants right?

@zoomycat after a quick Google search, bug zappers emit 365nm wavelength UV, which might cause problems, as you definitely want pitch black during your light cycles. Essentially your yield will suffer either from light stress or from herming. I would suggest setting your light cycle to 11 hours or 11.5 hours on, then leaving the bug zappers on for a half hour to an hour after you go dark.

              • @undefined This was actually my thoughts of the solution was 30 minutes before and after. However what I’m growing so far is/has been autos. I do have some nice photo seeds to grow and I think I’d treat them differently due to their sensitivity towards light.

I am pretty close to the 70 day mark and this is a 70-90 day until harvest variety. The plant has just started generating its frostiness on the sugar leaves and such. Perhaps I’ll get one of my other timers going on a 30 minute adjusted on each end for the zappers.

That light spectrum is supposed to be able to boost the Cannabinoids, Terpenes and Flavonoids in the resulting flower so I wanted to try it out with my Autos. My theory was that we get some of this light refracted back by the moon so having it on all the time might mimic that in some way. I know its far from perfect but also a clever budget solution to having UVA in the grow.

The timer method might be better but that limits the capability as an IPM. Yes I have sticky traps and stuff that is not a problem. I’m just finding the zappers to be highly effective against the would be invaders.

            • Agreed very interesting

              • I wouldn’t run those bug zappers at night. You want complete darkness, or your yield will suffer greatly.

                • @johnny509 I honestly can’t find information one way or another on the internet so I’m on the fence of whether its good or not. I need more information as to why it would be bad as people run autos under 24H of light and say its beneficial.

I know it was most active at night so perhaps a small portion before/after the other lights turn off. I do have another timer I can use for them if I decide that is best. I just want more information other than my yield will suffer.
