Butt chugging info please…
New grower using the AC inf wicking bases. Was hoping to get some advice on when to top water if too top water, adding nutrients, ect. I understand the basics and am going to use rice hulls as aerator and mulch to retain moisture and add silica. I was only planning on top watering until roots reach the base then refilling the bases as needed. I would then only be top watering when adding the build a flower top dressing as needed to work into the soil. I should only need to start adding nutrients at wk 6-7 veg flower if the soil holds up like I’ve researched. Started in happy then transplanting into ocean forest with worm castings and MRy. was planning on adding build a flw biweekly and introducing organic gem fish H. around the same time. Im using em5 as an ipm on alternate wks. Any advice is welcome and appreciated thanks.

Bottom wicking feeders deposit salt at the top of the media. If you top water it can push those salts down into the root zone. I only top water when feeding recharge when using bottom feeding systems. Just my opinion.

@undefined is that what that shit was?🤯

Where is the salt coming from? The depletion of nutrients already in the soil?

Thank you very much for the info. I understand the synthetic nuts can leave salt but is that the same for what they use in the foxfarm soil?

Could I work around that by making and amending the soil myself with no salt based nuts? Just trying to learn sorry to blow up the thread.

Fox farms uses salt based nutrients. It’s not a big deal, it’s just something to be aware of. You will notice after a couple months in bottom feed systems the top of the media becomes real hard and crusty but if you stick your finger down in the root zone it’s soft and wet. That’s the concentration of salts that have built up at the top of the media.

I use autopots not a wicking system but in theory should be similar. I try to inoculated the root zone by transferring up to 1 gallon pots then I transfer into autopots and I no longer top water. When I first started I would top water and would get terrible note burn in flower.
