Watering vs. Feeding: What’s the Difference?

What’s going on DGC? I figured this would be a good topic to go over for new growers & those just starting their horticulture/cannabis adventure! What’s the difference between “watering” and “feeding” your ladies?

The main difference between watering and feeding cannabis plants lies in what you’re providing to the plant:

Watering

Purpose: To keep the plant hydrated and maintain the moisture level in the growing medium.

What’s in it: Good ol’ H2O–water (ideally pH-adjusted to around 6.0-7.0 for soil or 5.5-6.5 for hydro/coco) without additional nutrients.

Frequency: This can depend on factors like plant size, pot size, temperature, humidity, and the growing medium. General rule of thumb–water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry or the pot feels light.

Signs of proper watering: Even moisture throughout the medium without overwatering (which can cause root rot) or underwatering (leading to drooping leaves).

Feeding

Purpose: To supply the plant with nutrients required for growth, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK), along with micronutrients.

What’s in it: Water mixed with nutrients or fertilizers designed for cannabis, which can vary based on the plant’s growth stage:

Veg stage: Typically higher nitrogen.

Flowering stage: Typically higher phosphorus and potassium.

Frequency: Often every second or third watering, allowing for “plain water” in between to flush out excess salts and avoid nutrient buildup. This all varies from lady to lady, of course.

Signs of proper feeding: Healthy green foliage, robust growth, and no signs of nutrient deficiencies (yellowing leaves, discoloration) or toxicities (burnt leaf tips).
