Covering Coco

Hey Team, love your content and can’t wait to get the App opened down here in New Zealand. I’m growing in 10gal air pots in one tent, third grow like this BUT I find some coir covers fit the medium, fit snug. I’ve noted the plants are growing really well, using about two thirds (66%) of the water/nutes to other grows. All indicators are the covers are a must for future grows. I water through the coir may so it acts to slow and spread the water better than my usual heavy handed unscientific pouring water from a can.

Who else covers their medium? Any downsides to be aware of?

    Can’t hurt.

I know the hydro cubes turn into big green algae bombs if you don’t cover them, never seen algae growth in any of my coco?

I have witnessed some of my pearlite turning green early in veg when the light reaches the substrate.

Should help keep moisture in and prevent evaporation from the substrate surface.

    Keep us informed please.

I use fabric pots with a coco media which I cover with a water diffusing tray for hi frequency fertigation (apologies for the quality of photo🤔)

I’ve been using hydroton to cover my coco. Been doing it for about 2 years now. Wash rinse and reuse. Hate when I step on em bare foot, but overall love using them.

Well 6 weeks into flower today and I’ve had zero issues with the covered coco, in fact compared to last grow without a cover they’re healthier and I’m going through in the vicinity of 50%-60% of the *usual* feed/ water by volume. I am keeping to my feed recipe, but noticing the plants aren’t drying anywhere near as quick, so instead of a 5 day watering cycle at week 6, I’m still on 7 days per water/feed now – just down from 8. Plenty of nice bud development happening, they’re starting to thicken nicely and beautiful smells – best nose I’ve had from this strain in all my grows with it.

As a comparison, one of my autopots in the other tent, same environment and feed just started with green algae on the medium surface. It’s been raining heavy for a few days and I’m struggling to keep lung room humidity down below 70% – hence the dehumidifier inside the tents now (1 in each and the ac in the lung room to keep temps stable)

Trimmed them today, a few yellowing and dying fan leaves fed the worms, and some lower larfy buds that aren’t getting light under this nice canopy. Some good vertical bud development in the covers coco as well.

Struggling keeping environment stable, as the old dehumidifier is pumping out heat, so lights on temp sitting at 80f (26c) with 65%-70% humidity. It’s higher than I’ve previously run, I was surprised as I thought with the medium covered humidity would be lower, but can’t account for it leaking from the sky outside! At what point do I need to concern myself with mould/rot?

Dehumidifier set to 65% using the inkbird 301 and temps are 68-70f lights off and stable 80-82 lights on.

So I recently switched to coco( canna) and I’ve heard that it’s hard to overwater which is good because I tend to over “love” my girls. Lol Ive also heard that some growers are watering every 3 to four days? Is this dependent on the strain? All while asking this I haven’t had any issues however these are outdoors and I don’t want anything helping produce mold other than what my climate may produce. Thanks DGC!
