Mid Flower Issues

What’s up DGC? I’m having an issue during mid flower. This is the third run I’ve had where, during weeks 4-6 of flower, the leaves start turning yellow and dying off. It starts lower on the plant, and works its way upward. I suspected a magnesium deficiency, so for this run, I’ve been adding epsom salt to the water once per week. This is the first run I’ve done synthetic nutrients in soil, thinking that maybe a “complete” fertilizer would solve the issue

    Advanced Nutrients

    • Bloom A –
    • Bloom B
    • Big Bud
    • epsom salt

The last picture is from my last run, and it ended up getting chopped early

Synthetic is tough. As an organic grower some of the lower leaves will always Yellow in bloom. The mobile nutrients in the bigger fan leaves will always move where needed.

I have 2 mars hydro ts1000 (150w) each, about 12-14” away. Do you think it’s normal? For them to turn yellow and die like they were in that picture?

First question is what nutrients are you feeding them because they look like they’re running out of nitrogen? Do you cut out the veg nutrients as soon as you switch them to 12-12 or do you continue with the veg nutrients for a couple of weeks before transitioning to the bloom nutrients?

They have a 4-4-4 blend mixed into the soil, and I’m feeding them with advanced nutrients per the bottle

    Are you monitoring PH?

I haven’t checked the ph of the soil. From my understanding, growing in soil, the ph tends to buffer itself? Idk if that’s accurate, but if not, that could be the issue

An out of range pH buffer will lock out minerals in any media. It’s almost always the reason plants lack nutrition. Often times heavy feeding from veg through mid flower can cause a salt build up if allowed to dry back too much too often tanking pH.

Should I just use plain water then to help flush the salts?

First thing to do is find out about where the pH and EC/PPM buffer of the soil is with a quick run off test using RO/distilled water. RO has no pH or mineral buffer. The run off will give a little more accurate result. A decent test is to use about an equal volume of water to media and then check the run off numbers. If pH and/or PPM are out of range, adjust from there. A very high PPM may call for a flush. A heavy rinse will wash out the non metals nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, chloride and molybdate so don’t go heavy mid run without replacing these elements right after a flush.

I would check your water. For years I would run into these kind of issues.

Then I started using Cal Mag as a base to bring my water EC up to 0.4 and then add my nutrients to that base.

Since then I have never seen another issue and my plants always look super healthy.

I thought it could be a mag deficiency, so I’ve been adding epsom salt to the water. The synthetic nutrients have calcium in them, just not much magnesium. I have a feeling that I could be ph related

I promise you the magnesium and calcium ratios in your plant food are balanced at a certain ratio. Calcium and magnesium will compete for uptake through the same path and too much of one will lead to a deficiency of the other. Hence why it’s always sold and used together, “CalMag”. If I need more magnesium I do use Epsom salts but only with a foliar spray so I don’t mess up this balance in the soil itself.

Seems to be my same problem but it only seems to happen to me with sativa’s.
