Bud-wash after harvest, do you do it?

When discussed, the subject is treated with the same level of importance
as watering or drying, but it’s so rarely discussed, that it doesn’t
    seem like a common practice.

How many home growers clean contaminates off their flower before the drying process by rinsing or dipping?
Do you use tap water or RO?
    Do you use diluted peroxide?
How long does it extend the drying process?

Indoor grows seem like the flower would be much cleaner than outside, but the indoor environment has a lot of contaminates that wouldn’t be an issue outside. Chemical residues from cooking, cleaning, etc. Not to mention, outside grows get a periodic wash from rain.

  • i never do this, i put effort to keep my grow space as clean as i can. If i have issues with some plant i do not fuck around and trash it.

    • I’m not talking about heavy contamination that would require culling.

I’m talking about every day contaminates. Human hair, pet hair, dust, loose fibers, aerosolized oils from cooking, residue from burning candles, etc. Normal stuff that is going to get on your plants unless you are running a hermetically sealed lab and wearing a Tyvek suit.

      • For outdoor grow might be a good thing i never grow outside. For indoor grow you shouldn’t need to wash your buds if done properly.(i always take a shower, change cloth, even have a pair of shoes that never leave my grow room, etc) Sometimes shit can happen if it does i prefer to do bubble hash with it then to wash the buds for minor issues. That’s the route i would take. With growing cannabis there is not only 1 way of doing things as long as the quality of end product is there, the grower is happy with it and the product isn’t harmful for your health that’s what really count, more then the process to reach the final goal (harvest) 🙂 Have a happy grow everybody !

      • Didnt see this before my lower comment. If its concerning your buds need it, then do it. Indoor there are preventatives that can be used. Add a filter scrubber to intake of tent in future. Keep hair cleaned from area, clothes, etc. Normal day life happens, if not avoidable then wash. Who is to tell you that your bud is clean enough for you? I stated below the method i have used to wash. I do my wash at harvest, havent had any negative to my dry and cure. Hope this helps ease you and you get your happy clean smoke! Throw a couple pics up, always fun to see processes!

  • I think it’s needed on some level. I’ve only done it once after fighting spider mites the entire grow. 3 buckets, ro water in each then i added 3 caps of peroxide and about a shot of lemon juice to the first bucket and leave the other 2 just plain water. Dip in water, peroxide and lemon juice bucket first then the other 2 buckets. I could see mites in the first 2 buckets but not so much the third. It took the full 2 weeks to dry. But the finished product was really good. I recommend it if it’s needed due to pest or excessive dust build up in your growing environment.

  • absolutely not!!!!!!!!! , i filter my air being drawn into my tents, (dogs) i just flipped my carbon filters to the intake side and works great . when i open my tents (daily) i take great precaution not to have alot of air low while working with them , i inspect them before trimming they dry in a specific tent (evap controlled) and filtered air in of course

On outdoor definitely a light dip into a bucket of water to fully submerge any little bugs hiding will float right top the top of the water. It also helps with bird shit, bug shit. Im talking just a solid dunk in and twist a few times then bring out, shake and hang. Gentle enough not to mess up the trichomes to much. Ive done this and my cannabis is still potent with lots of stickyness.

  • I never clean my indoor buds, but outdoor plants every single time! The amount of bugs, dirt, and other contaminates that get trapped in the buds as they develop is pretty gross. There’s always spider webs, caterpillar poop, and flies stuck in the trichomes. Dechlorinated tap water with lemon juice and baking soda with other water buckets is what I’ve used.

  • Indoors can be controlled as far as what is near your plants. If you are getting cooking oil residue on plants maybe look at a new area or a better tent. Outdoor has way more dirt, pest, and contams in the air. To wash i use a 3 bucket method. I use tap water. First bucket warm water baking soda and lemon juice. 2nd bucket warm water. 3rd bucket cold water. Peroxide is not needed. This is mainly for dirt and such. Normal molds molecules and air borne pathogens and such you will never eliminate. As soon as its out the bucket the air goes right back to it, whatever is in the air is there. Would need a fully scrubbed and hepa filtered enviroment for the whole grow to accomplish a “clean” air for bud to grow in.

    • Please don’t use warm or cold water. The temp of your water means A LOT. Too warm melts trichomes, too cold breaks them. In my opinion 68-72° is best.

      • At harvest they are not brittle like fresh frozen or dried. They have plenty of attachment to plant at this point.

  • thats a big NO here. if you have smoked anything you didnt grow you already smoked bugs, poop and everything else out there

  • Someone said take a piece of glass and lay it outside for 4-5 months. After that time look at whats on the glass. I don’t know whats all there but I defiantly don’t want to smoke it. I live in the city and that makes it worse IMO. I give away my yearly Blueberry indica garden grow but I still want it clean. Older friends love it. I use three dish pans and the ‘Angus 420 method’. You will not believe what you see floating. Indoor I wash but for a different reason. Laundry day for some good bubble.

  • If you are an outdoor grower, I would say absolutely, bud washing is needed.
I am an indoor grower, and only bud wash if there is a reason to. I mean, if I had parasites or whatever during the grow. I sure don’t want to be inhaling bug shit or mold. It is creepy when you look at the buckets after and see how much stuff is in there.

  • A popular bud wash is mixing baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and lemon juice (citric acid) together. This creates sodium citrate and carbon dioxide gas. Basically bubbles and fizzing. Kinda the same idea as cleaning your white shirt with soda water at dinner to remove a stain.

I did this one year for my outdoor. I used three 5 gal buckets. First one was the lemon and baking soda mix. The second and third were rinse buckets. I used normal tap water. My well water is very clean. Reads at about 70 ppm at it highest. Sometiems low as 10 ppm.

I seperated the plant into dunkable branches, and once finished with the dunks i would swing the branches in a gentle whipping motion to snap off excess water. Then hung them to dry in my garage instead of putting wet branches in my drying tent. I had to replace the rinse buckets with fresh water a couple of times. Its crazy to see how many bugs can get trapped in your outdoor bud lol. I do forget the ratios of lemon juice to baking soda. If you google this process you can easily find it. I personally wouldn’t bother with washing indoor bud. But to each their own.
