Companion plants in small grow areas. Yeah or Nay

I was sitting looking at my indoor grow (I call it my meditation chamber) and start thinking what would be the pros and cons of growing things like basil that can help repel various insects we don’t want in our grow areas. Which companion plants? Things to consider? Will the aromas transfer over??

  • I have done this. Used as cover crop grown right under the plants. Basil, dill, sage, rosemary, catnip, parsley, even thyme which is still half covering the surface. I keep a live army of predators. For how good it works to rid pest, i didnt notice anything appear. No aroma or anything transfers to the cannabis. Grown as cover crop benefits the living soil im in, not needed as cover crop in regular 5 gallons and such. They can be placed around the grow no harm will be done. Also gives fresh herbs for cooking or medical tinctures or something.

  • i one time put a potato bag in with a grow , did well but wasted space in my opinion

  • It’s a nice idea but it really depends on set up really. Are you in beds, containers, tent, closet, limited spaces, etc, etc. What set up you got would help determine these things. I wouldn’t do this unless you have a bigger area, a bed or a full room your growing in. Just my opinion tho… My favorites are Mint, Thyme, Basil, Legumes (for Nitrogen fixing), French Marigolds, Rosemarey and Traditional clover mix cover crop are my favorites to use. Good luck.

  • I don’t think flavors/aromas transfer and I don’t believe in the plants scaring away bugs (my basil, etc. has bug holes in leaves outside), BUT I think it’s a great idea if it makes you happy. I grow other plants in the shadows of the veg tent, or in extra space here and there. Basil leaves get bigger when you give them less light and a nice humid environment like a veg/clone tent.

Another idea I started doing is growing a pot of zinnias in the veg tent. Zinnias form strong, fast relations with endomycorrhizal fungi. I harvest the bottom half of roots/soil and blend it into my cannabis plants’ soil at first transplant. Each time I get a new bag of Mykos, Bigfoot, etc. I add a bit to the zinnias too.

  • This picture is a situation it will be benficial. A small area will clutter with them around. All depends what you prefer, user above have great points as well.

  • Cover crop yes, other large plants, not so much so… Aromas are plant specific (terpenes) and don’t transfer, they volitize (from Light and Heat) and float away. Just don’t let your secondary plants (cover crops) become competition for your cash crop. Chop and Drop is the way to build soil.

  • Check out Luna Whitcomb on instagram she is Lunallady she lots of cover crop and her grows are beautiful

  • If I was in 30gals or a 2×4 bed I might, but earth boxes and 10 gals get reflective mylar mulch LOL

  • Hey this is an interesting topic! I’m going to put this on the WHEEL OF GROW TALK so it will come up as a discussion topic on a future episode of the 420 HAPPY HOUR, a show we do live on youtube every Friday! Thanks for sharing and come hang out if you wanna hear us chat about it!! https://www.youtube.com/@DGCHappyHour/streams

  • I grow hydro lettuce and other greens downstairs. I grow herbs and cilantro. Sometimes tomatoes and peppers. Every time i try peppers indoors i get aphids, even in coco with good ipm. I dont know if the herbs repel bugs, but if you slack, they bring in more bugs than normal. Got to keep stuff cleaned up.
