How Horny is too Horny?

So I am currently taking on my first breeding run and this particular male has me perplexed. All the other plants are just barely (I have 7 out of 28:that still are TBD) starting to show sex and yet this guy has been showing for a couple weeks now. This particular plant is from a bad seed that was the unintended result of my outdoor harvest. Initially I assumed it was the plant next to it. Now I am wondering if it got hit with a bag seed Betty auto flower somewhere near by or if it’s just the horniest plant I’ve ever seen pre-flower.<div>

I should note that I have not flipped the light cycle yet as I am waiting to confirm some of the other plants sexes. Also the clusters of pollen sacks are forming at every node, top to bottom and on every branch.

I believe on one of Rasta Jeff’s podcast he spoke about not wanting to use a male that shows its sex too early. I personally do feminized breeding mostly but the one time I used a male for my MBC project I chose one that showed its sex in late week 2 of flower, and the results were good. I believe that you want this so that when your plant goes into flower the first couple weeks it’s goal is stretching and not bud production too early in to its cycle. Curious what other plant breeders think? Glad to see your thinking of making a cross, it’s a lot of fun. Best of luck!

Interesting…I might experiment with it just to see the difference. Don’t most plants show signs of sex pre flower though? Thanks for the input!

I suppose some can depending on how long they veg. In my experience pollen sacs typically don’t show until flower. Although I have seen early signs occasionally.

In my experience yes females tend to show two little tiny pistils in the crotch of many branches, even during veg. That said, I’ve not seen any male do that (can’t say it doesn’t happen, but using preflowers to identify females in veg just always seems easier than finding the males).

That said @rollin-fattys above is correct, RJ has mentioned he definitely hesitates to use the first wild male that flowers prematurely—the reasoning being it can contribute too much of the male genes into the seeds and you wind up with an imbalance of plants that all lean towards daddy. So when picking males across a particular cultivar, he tends to pass on the premature one.
