I hermied a plant.

cerberus420ParticipantNovember 16, 2025 at 10:05 pmdetails, soil from back to the roots blend with biochar and compost. my roots were completely root bound in a 5 gal bucket, chopped maybe 10 days to early, first day visually seeing the nanas. plant stretched out the entire 4 foot enclosure from wall to wall, but the buds didn’t fully buff out. The hairs have almost all turned amber color and the weight of the branches were an everyday hassle. overall the buds still have a very potent smell. The male reproductive parts were only coming out of the smaller newer shoots from the bottom. did I do right by cutting it early, or can you pinch them off, or if this was a cause of stress, it would’ve just continued right?

You can induce an intersex plant to form pollen sacs. Stress or no stress, it’s always genetic and never your fault. It’s better to know asap, so as little time as possible is wasted.

let’s be VERY honest here, every cannabis plant has the ability to stress produce pollen, or we just would not have feminized seeds, period. Cannabis is not a sexually stable genus, it is actively still in the process of evolving from a primary monoecious reproduction, while we are helping to stabilize the species the secondary stress reproduction method is still vital to wild as well as cultivated fiber hemp plants.
We need to be more transparently honest about the truths and limits of the plants and seeds that we love. I see to many newer growers bad mouthing reputable breeders because their expectations aren’t realistic. I’ve hermed the best genetics on the planet, and so will you if you do this long enough.
Stable beans exist but they are only stable until they are not.

Yeah feminzed I agree with you both. But regular it’s never happened to me, maybe just luck but I’ve gone off feminized seeds. They just aren’t as tough all round in my opinion. Granted they are great if you have just a 2×2 or limited space

Not true. Stable genetics will not throw pollen sacs unless chemically altered.

I can’t believe that is coming from somebody with your renown, I’m not trolling or picking on you, but stress *is* a chemical alteration of a plant. there is not a single plant in the genus that we can feminize with a spray that we can’t feminize with environmental stress. I have put money on this serval times and won and will do again because that’s reputable science and the safest bet in town.
Don’t believe me thought, just because I’m being adamant, try it yourself, take you strongest genetic and stress it during the first 4 weeks of flowering. and pick your poison, cold roots, low light stress, excessive training, extra… Ice water feeding will do it for sure, unlike silver topicals, with environmental stress the results can happen instantly or at the end of flowering, but it will happen.

I’ve had many plants for over the years that have never thrown a pollen sac, no matter the stress. To say all cannabis plants have intersex genes is ridiculous. Inbreeding has real consequences that were not as prevalent 30 years ago. Outlaws didn’t pollen chuck like instagramers. Rudy is coming for the gene pool now. The future is bleak. I’ve been doing this for a very long time and have seen and done it all.

Congratulations for have your environment down, but your personal diligence doesn’t safeguard it from being possible. I could qualify my opinion by saying I’ve been at this more than double your growing career, with degrees in molecular biology, agronomy and I taught organic chemistry for decade as well.
I am making a true statement when I say the is no natural way to breed out the possibility of intersex traits without gene editing, the best we can do is try reducing the plant’s ability to respond to stress by breeding in more resilience,
Anyway, for the sake of science, I will buy your suggested “most stable” cut or beans and film the entire experiment, I understand that there is opportunity for malice, so I invite you to play along at home. A combination ice water feeding and uneven low light stress will do it.

I’m down for this. Let me know on which strain you guys decide to do. I’d like to participate. I miss these old forum like challenges, but I also know that what 2cents saying is true that’s how we used to reverse plants back in the day. We didn’t get the same even full reversal that you would with STS but hell we would get some female pollen. And I have herded some of the best genetics.Just by having enough canopy to thick, the plants in the life zone tend to produce a stress anther the same as light leak would produce.
And a not trolling but Professor 2cents has said anything I don’t agree with save for qualification can’t verify., but I have no reason to doubt.

No, I dig It, I tried to change my screen name to 2cents right now, but its taken or BNR has that locked down.

I’m gonna say I agree that cannabis is unstable sexually as a genius. I mean, that’s literally on the Wikipedia page. Lol.
But I will say that you are correct that most fems are probably less stable because they made themselves in the beginning with self pollination, so most cultivated feminized varieties probably have less staple genetics just because of their family tree.
As a breeder, I will responsibly cull anything that has tendencies to be unstable but I know I could never fully remove the possibility.
All that being said, I love the idea of honesty in the community. There is been too many timeshare salesman taking things personally when you don’t share their philosophies.
I don’t think anybody here has any malice in their opinions and everybody is valid.

What strain was the plant? Please share if you are comfortable doing so.
If you like the looks, smell, taste & effects of your cured flower, I’m hoping you will find some seeds in the buds. Repeat your grow with the same conditions to see if you get the same results.
Good Luck

I’ve seen a few Hermie seeds on some of the best genetics I’ve grown but that doesn’t necessary mean that there’s grower error or genetic fuckery.
Maybe I’m just old. I thought cannabis was supposed to produce a few seeds here and there and are still worth growing or smoking.

Here I am trying to herm a plant with colidail silver in a negative pressure tent for breeding purposes and failed just to find out one of the MAG landrace #76 clones in my positive pressure tent hermed.
