    Hey DGC Crew,

Here’s something I rarely see covered, that I’d like to hear your take on as growers. While we all like clones, they have to come from somewhere! Someone popped a pack of seeds, and hunted through the offspring for good phenotypical expression. This leads newer growers like myself to ask – what does that mean? I had many questions with folks, especially breeders about what a “good phenotype” is, and all of them expressed some variation on, “I don’t know, it depends on what you’re looking for.” This was frustrating, and I was finally able to verbalize better what I was really asking: In a general sense, what are good plant structures in general that you look for in the plants that you grow? Also, y’all need to have @jmystro on the main show, along with other breeding minded people like Rasta Jeff! I invite people to chime in on this and suggest others in our community who do the work in the trenches that we’d love to see on the show itself!

I searched for this in the seeds I bought. I knew I was growing indoors so I wanted a short plant expression with low internodal spacing. This sometimes makes the plant difficult to train it also makes for a good plant to grow indoors. How frosty the buds are, resistance to disease, Size of the overall plant and flower, Color expressions, Flavor, smell, which goes into terpene expression, how much THC or CBD is in the general resulting flower etc etc. All are things that people would look for but what each person wants may be different and why you get that generic… Well it depends on what you want.

I’m a new grower as well but I put a lot of thought into all of this as I want to get into breeding for personal/medical use.

Also the stretch rate being a low stretch variety was important to me.

I like pooping seeds to see what is in a pack. Some like to branch (fist bump) which mite be good for scrogging and training, and some (like cheese) like not to be topped and trained. Some like dryer spaces and some can handle the humidity (white widow, lemon skunk)better and be resist mold. Some have different smells and terp profiles differ. You may like one better. Some may be sweeter, one may be more sour.( bugs like the sweeter smells) some may have wider vs thinner leaves. You pick the one you like best, that fits your style best. It’s subjective to you and your space. That’s beauty with this hobby

    happy hunting.

Phenotypic Expression is the traits that are passed down from the parent plants. These are traits that are observable. For instance, My more indica leaning phenotypes are generally more squat with denser buds. My more sativa strains are generally more lanky and airy. This is because of phenotype.

Branching, Terpenes, Potency, Flowering time, etc. This depends highly on the genetics. Once you grow a plant then this is a cultivare. You have influenced the plants growth by how you grew it. In other words; You have cultivated this individual plant.

This simply means that this plant was influenced by human care, and practices. The only way to find that plant that meets your needs is to grow different strains. I personnally like the gas. If you grow from seed as I do; Each plant is unique, but still carry the general traits of it’s parents.

If you grow from clones you already know what ends up in the end. If you find that “unicorn” clone away. I just like to be suprised by my final product.

It is imperative to start with strong genetics from a reputable source. I don’t want to grow weak plants. After all we invest a lot of time and $$$ in our grows. My worst grow was great! I grow autos so my worst grow produced 3o’s of good bud.

    Hope this was helpful…Happy growing.

To a degree, yes. I’m looking for specificity around the various anatomical structures of the plant. Tall vs short is a good start for sure, I have a 6.5′ ceiling and a 6′ tall 4′ x 8′ tent, so more sativa leaning plants will be important for me in general.

Genotype (Genetic tree) plus environment equals phenotype. The trichome’s profile is known as the chemotype (chemical profile). Genetics express themselves in many ways, in part based on their environment along with it’s genetic code. The environment not only includes air temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure. Light spectrum/intensity, mineral availability and other bio-stimulants also affect plant morphology. Structure is mainly genetic with other environmental influences playing a role. Main variables I’m looking for include vigor, flower time, branch thickness (girth>length), tight internodal spacing, number of bract/calyx per nodal cluster, cluster shape, trichome density per calyx, calyx to leaf ratio, etc. Trichomes that form on stems and large fan leaves as well are a good sign. The chemotype is the most important variable along with structure and trichome density. How a plant smells while it’s alive can have little to no bearing on the final flavor. It’s all about flavor and effect when consuming. For the new people that don’t know, I will not do interviews as a wanted man. I’m still considered a criminal where I live with my multiple cannabis felonies and fuck you demeanor.

Sorry Mate, my intention was to compliment you on your wealth knowledge not to stir no pots.

Dude, I love reading your stuff. I’m old and absolute, but I still like learning. I appreciate all your teachings 🙏

Respect @jmystro . It makes your contributions worth all the more in my book. I remember how it feels to be seen as a criminal for something so innocent. My roots are in the legacy days and I am thankful I live where I don’t really even worry about running a carbon filter.
