Re-vegging worth it to keep a unicorn?

Is re-vegging worth it at all on a photoperiod? I see my current plant and I keep thinking a partial harvest could work but I should still wait. The whole plant won’t be ready at the same time. Of course this is not possible with the current plants as they are autos.

The talk of perpetual grow and cloning got me wondering if re-vegging is another viable option or whether you’ve screwed up your plan at this point and should have been thinking about that clone game instead.

Yes. LemonHoko (a breeder) does this standard. Once the tops of plants are ready, he harvests the top 25% or so of the plant, and throws them all back in reveg. Then, he dries and cures the buds from his pheno hunt, and samples them all. The keepers, he fully reveges and takes clones from. The rest, he flowers out and smokes.

Personally, I suggest taking clones before flower.

Part of my considerations in this is due to plant counts. It is hard with a low count of 4 to consider using a mother and clones in the same way as someone using clones in larger plant counts.

That is why I’d prefer growing a plant out through flower and re-vegging/cloning those parts if you find something great. It just seems to make more sense when it comes to smaller plant counts so you can run multiple strains keeping the ones you like the most.

Bad practices should never be promoted. That ‘breeder’ is not a serious grower. Just because you make and sell seeds doesn’t mean you know shit.

I’m sorry, but LemonHoko has been around forever and is highly regarded. Have you ever talked to him, or grow out his famous Blueberry line? He’s been in the game for 30+ years, etc.

Plenty of experienced growers do noob shit. I’m not impressed. DJ Short is way more famous for Blueberry btw.

In years past bro science called the changing of a plant’s morphology (phenotypic expression) as genetic drift. A plant’s genetic potential is diminished when the plant’s phenotypic expressions change for the worse. There are many reasons to stress your genetics over time to the point where they’ve lost vigor. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. I teach proper techniques for long term viability based on actual science. A plant doesn’t have a phenotype. It has many it can express based on environmental conditions and it’s genetic code.

And sometimes, it’s disease. Thanks for the tip on DJ Short – I’ll get both and see which one I like more. 👍

Disease does change DNA/RNA and does cause genetic drift. That’s not some environmental phenotypic expression.

Yes, that was my point. What most call “Genetic Drift” isn’t.

I really good the feels at the timestamp when he said this. 100% agree. Doesn’t have to be the best but I grew it and that is something special to me. It was nice to hear him say what I feel about growing.

So that you know, LemonHoko’s Blueberry is descended from DJ Short’s Blueberry going way, way back. That’s why I asked you if you had ever grown Lem’s Blueberry, or had a chance to speak to him.

Are you okay? Your responses seem more sharp than usual. 😁 I hope you don’t get the winter blues like I do. It’s no fun at all.

Takes time and the maintance of defoliation. Ive had photos flower indoor in a tent and then put back out door for rd 2 during spring n summer also depends on genetics. Cannabis is an annual,. It suppose to die off yr after yr. I also noticed it can cause negative mutations in the genetics that ruin it anyway. Try it out, ive had good and bad runs where i wanted the phenos to show more but then the stress is too hard and gets trashed anyway. Def It can be a tool for breeding , Honestly it depends on alot of things now that im thinking about it . Trial and error !! Everytime you pop a new bean its still gonna be diff than rest. And not to forget every time u clone or reveg its losing potency, within that plants genetic make up. Can herm out too then that trait just gets introduced into its linage. Thats just my experience, ive been gardening for 7-8 yrs now. Im not a pro master gardner at all, but its all about trail and error. The garden is always evolving. Theres always new things happing. Always try new techniques and styles.

Thanks for the input based on your experience. I just feel with my current training style I ended up with central buds that aren’t really going anywhere. They are going to be popcorn buds if they don’t get any more maturity time. The rest of the plant I’ve got golf ball sized buds.

To me this seems like a partial harvest with reveg would work well for the plant or trying some sort of breeding schema on the remainder of the plant. Do you know if there is any real difference between chemically stressing to reverse or it happening via stress? Is one better than the other?

I lost a Blackwater plant back in my early days of growing and to this day I still haven’t found that same pheno from a pack of black water seeds so if there’s a chance to save that one you should try!

It’s the absolute last option I’d choose. Do what ya gotta do, but that’s not winning. Taking your genetics to death’s door step and fucking with their hormonal balance is not how you keep them viable long term. You’re just a terrible parent for not making a backup when growing from seed.

Thanks for the honesty. I guess this means a failure of planning and you should have been planning the clone game.

How would you do a cloning system for a small plant count? There has to be some balance between the plant and the cloning. I guess that is where spreading the clone is important.

It’s worth it if it’s something you love. And we’re all experimenting, science is ever evolving do what works best for you and your situation. We’re just starting to I understand the depths of this plant. I experiment with atleast 50% of my grows. Much love man.
