Root Rot

  • Posted by Royal T Farms on January 15, 2025 at 4:12 am

This is getting outrageous now. I have done 3 runs in dwc and rdwc and I have not been able to keep my roots nice and clean. I have 2 seperate tents and a grow room and in all 3 areas I have had my roots pretty and clean until the flowers start showing themselves. At about week 3 or 4 I experience the roots going from bright white to yellow in a day and brown in 3 days. I have used Hydroguard, peroxide and another product in different areas, but I am not getting those roots back to white. My reservoir temps never get above 72 degrees, room temps are 80 in the day, 70 at night. No drastic spikes in PH and the EC usually goes up.

Only other thing that comes to mind that I had to modify in my set up early on was the water lvl. I have found there needs to be some open air (couple inches) from the bottom of the net pots and to water lvl.

I agree on the space between net pot and water level, also wanted to ask about your air stone ? And or pump are you getting good strong air bubbles. I’ve bought a few kits myself and had a awful time trying to use just what they send in some of those setups. I’ve since upgraded my stones and pumps. And just about any problem I had with dwc and roots went away. Hope this may help.

In most cases I would have 2 air stones in each bucket using a large commerial air pump (I want to say 4000 gph, but not for sure right now), I am running a vevor 4 bucket rdwc with its original pump. I think I will add some air tolnight, now that you say that.

That is a good suggestion. I was told this before, but allowed it to slip my mind. I went ahead and added an additional stone to each bucket.

I fought with RDWC for about 3 years I would have a really good grow then the next 2 would fail for one reason or another, it was just too difficult to get consistent results and when you waste 3 and a half months to root rot or something with only a few more weeks its devastating. and when it happens twice its infuriating and demoralizing, makes you want to give up growing all together. then a few months ago I found out about Real Buckets, grow dots, recharge, and Canna professional plus coco, and life is so much easier now as far as my grow is concerned. I’m actually exited to grow again, I wish I had found grow dot sooner, but I was so heavily invested in equipment like a water cooler, PH controller and Doser pumps etc. that I felt like I couldn’t give up on it. I wouldn’t recommend RDWC or DWC to anyone that wants to have a cost-effective hassle-free experience

I agree a RDWC system can be expensive to get started, but I don’t like having a bunch of coco or soil around. I will give it a couple more runs to be sure I cannot produce quality flower.

Do you boil or otherwise sterilize those plugs before use?

I have never thought to do so. You should have seen my face when I saw this question. Classic Newbie!

Nutrient staining is a thing with some product lines. Nothing to freak out over if the plants are healthy.

I’m beginning to agree with you on the plants I am growing now. It seems to be a nutrient browning because the plants are looking healthy (no browning tips this time, no curling leaves). Thank You.
