Taking a poll, when you are popping seeds directly into soil (No paper towl method) just a soak in water first. How deep would you plant your seeds in the soil?

I have done all mine direct soil, only 9 plants so far but have also popped seed in the past I killed due to not having proper equipment (20 years ago broke) and I have always just plopped them into moist soil, unsoaked, and had great success with them popping. About 3 total didn’t pop and they were recent freebie seeds that looked small, pale and weak imo to begin with. I have done paper towel method and stopped due to issues with damaging tap roots.

I have only planted 10 seeds so far in my grow journey. All of these seeds I have directly sowed with no pre soak just watered to run off the media and about 1/4 inch deep and just a few drops around the seed to settle it in. I have only had 1 not germinate which was a freebie and was rather small and pale so it probably wasn’t good to begin with.

I put my seeds a quarter inch in peat plugs. And no shit 90% of my seeds break the soil in 2 days. I watch seed popping videos which have 3 or 4 steps to it and laugh. I guess the “content creators” have to keep on creating content. Believe me I am nothing special and very hands on so my success rate must be normal. One seed supplier even included an instruction card with 4 or 5 steps to it.

I like 0.5 to 0.75 of an inch of not-too-tightly-packed media above the seed head. I’ll make the hole as deep as a popped root needs first. I’ve experienced that they need some media friction above the seed ‘helmet’ so that it rubs off as it grows. The less media above, the more likely the helmet will stay on.

General gardening instruction for any type of seed says to sow them two to three times the width of the seed.

Like @saty, I use peat plugs, pushing the seed down until I can’t see it and scrape a little of the plug over the hole.

    Good Luck!
