Seeds that float or don’t ?

Hey gang, Im wondering what the difference is between seeds that float and seeds that don’t.

I just watched a video from a guy who started some seeds in a shot glass of water and they all sank when put into the glass. I dont think Ive ever experienced a bean sinking when I first put it into the water glass. (Maybe I’ve just never popped enough of them…?)

After 24hrs moved to the wet paper towel in a baggie. He was successful with the germination and growth.

Floating or sinking does not prove if its a viable seed?

    I’m curious…

  • No expert here but I thought they sank when they got fully hydrated. Maybe your guy had some really fresh hydrated beans.

  • It dont matter. Any seed can float or sink, any seed can do both and switch back and forth. Float and sink is nothing to watch.

    • I think that where the misunderstanding comes in . I was reading and they said some plants this technique may work on but cannabis isnt one. So im not sure what plants they were referring to but I guess there are some .

      • I can see that factoring. Sometimes all it takes is an air pocket to be in the seed, it to be less dense. Not related to health or viability. Some plants i can see it being legit. Feel like a bog or somewhere it has to sink in wet would need to sink.

You started this question like we were sitting in the Myster-machine contemplating Scooby snacks. But yeah, with light or undeveloped seeds, I will generally soak them for 24 (gently shaking now and then) and if they stay super buoyant and do drop to the bottom, I cull them.

  • Man, I throw mine in a shot glass. I don’t worry about if they float or sink. I just worry about if they crack or not. Once that crack tail comes out they go in the dirt ones that don’t well them ones are bad. You don’t know unless you know you know

  • i soak mine in water until they crack good then i just direct sow. no paper towl just a cup of water. my opinion.

  • Hey this is an interesting topic! I’m going to put this on the WHEEL OF GROW TALK so it will come up as a discussion topic on a future episode of the 420 HAPPY HOUR, a show we do live on youtube every Friday! Thanks for sharing and come hang out if you wanna hear us chat about it!! https://www.youtube.com/@DGCHappyHour/streams

    • we finally talked about it on this weeks show! check it out!

  • I’ve had seeds float and seeds sink. Either was they have grown into viable plants.

  • I have not soaked seeds in a while as I direct sow my beans.

I think this question got a little convoluted or People seem to be answering their own versions of the question.

The obvious answer should be go pop some seats learn how they’re very cheap to make and once you get through a couple hundred you’ll be able to just look at a seed and if it is viable

When it comes down to it, it’s about viability and viability doesn’t necessarily just mean it’s going to pop. You have to consider the health of the embryo. If you wanna take the time to coax that weak seed out of its shell by all means do your thing.
