Under Canopy Lighting
Posted by SmokalottaPOTamus on January 4, 2025 at 9:24 amWhat’s going on DGC fam? I’m wanting to know YOUR thoughts and experiences with under canopy lighting. What type, spectrum, wattage/intensity have you had the most success with? Have you noticed better growth in veg, flower, or both? How long and at what height should you run the under canopy lighting? Let’s hear your take! Much
& dank nugs!

I know @ZoomyCat uses them and is successful. I’ve been wondering about them and asking around for input. Seems to be pretty beneficial from what I’ve seen and heard.

I’ll be using them on my next grow. I’m too cheap to buy a scrog net so I’m making one for the new plant. I think I’ll have better harvests with the under canopy lights hitting bud sites like never before! LOL

It definitely seems like if you have the opportunity to run them, you should. I haven’t heard anything about it causing harm in any way. If you need tips on building your SCROG setup, check out Northern Scrogger, he’s the titan of tucking! Lol

Yup. They work good as far as I know. I’ve not had a harvest with them though.

I have good results with side lighting. Can put some spider farmer glow80 on tent poles. I see big difference. May be I’m under lit from the top? What got me into the side lights was the phototron backin the day. One of its selling points was close internode spacing

I’ve had good experience with them if you are in a small tent with a super bushy strain it gets all the spots the upper light misses. You will see a difference within two weeks . All the buds usually come out fairly uniform that way .

You can jump on my timeline I had a nukeheads and purple haze auto I ran with some lower lights in place they are chunky all the way up .

Ordered a pair on Black Friday , I’ll be testing them next reload

It does beg the question whether if you have access to side lighting, you’re better off just leaving the plants to grow as normal, and save loads of time on veg..
The benefit of having a level canopy indoors was really due to the fact that indoor lights unnaturally only come from the top, where’s the sun gives them different angles of light. Doing all the topping/training can add a month onto your veg which maybe now is better spent on quicker turnaround?

Well for this style grow there is some veg time that has to happen in order to fill out the screen. Running 4 plants does speed up the process. Final yield is what it’s all about. For me, if I’m not hitting at least a pound or more then the time and effort would not be worth it. Besides I’m about the process. The side lights are nice. I did learn that with this style grow, I will wait to hit those lights later rather than early. My 2 Bruce monsters went ape shit and bushed out like crazy which eventually led me to have to drop the canopy another 5” mid scrog. Next run I’m going to set a base in there to raise the plants up. I would have done it this run but I was also trying out a gravity fed watering system so didn’t want to mess with it. Anyways more to come when I do my post harvest story which I do every grow in my journal to go over what tweaks in the process worked and what didn’t.

I usually do 3 cycles a year, each about 5 months of work start to finish. I don’t think I could smoke anymore than 3 lbs a year
