What causes a self topper?

Is it a genetic mutation or caused by environmental conditions? I’m growing some unknown from my random stash of seeds, my first indoor grow and this is more of a test and get to know my equipment run before I run good genetics. The seedling did some weird crap and ended up sprouting two mains, I was like hell yeah considering I was planning on topping it anyway. I have never heard of them self topping though.

Mainline it. You’re already set. Or not, or not haha

      Yes, do this👆.

You’re set up pretty much perfectly. Tie each branch down and Grow them out horizontally until each one has 4 nodes then top both branches back to the 3rd node. Remove the growth from the 1st and 2nd node on each branch except for the fan leaves, leaving only the two new branches from the 3rd node. You’ll then have 4 main branches that you grow each to the 3rd node and top each one and you’ll end up with 8 main tops. It’s very easy and plus the symmetry of Mainlines make the plants look pretty cool.

Or you can do a Manifold which still gives you 8 main branches but you won’t have to top it as many times to get 8 of them. Which is the way I’m doing one currently. Go ahead and try it with that plant so you’ll know what to do when you start a high value run. You could keep multiplying your main tops by continuing to top each branch. You could have upwards of 32+ main tops pretty easily.

Well I think I’m a little late to mainline, same plant in both pictures, one month of growth apart. I’ve seen pictures of it done but did not know the terminology. You guys are teaching me a lot. I’ll definitely try mainlining on my next runs. Gonna do a few rookie runs and get the kinks worked out then I’m gonna try to do some fancy grows like you guys.

Mainlines are great for beginners. Having all that hands-on interaction really helps learning things. They grow fast so you’re with the plant regularly adjusting tie downs or adding more and stuff. Normally if you’re just letting them grow out you wouldn’t spend much time other than watering and some defoliation everyone once and a while. I might’ve grown 2 autoflowers out naturally before I started training my plants, I train them all now. I love shaping them, there’s a guy youtube that the main stalk of his plant was like 3 or 4 separate branches that he braided as it grew. “Pirateboarder Life” is his YT channel. Older Canadian dude that’s been growing for years, great channel, awesome vibes. He grows some literal weed trees, 8+ ft tall.

Sorry, not trying to tell you what to do lol. You do things how you want, the beauty of growing yourself.

My Bear Assed Monkey auto had a Whorled Phyllotaxy mutation that was accompanied by it self topping. It didn’t top its main stalk though. Both branches of the 2nd node mutated, one grew 3 bud sites at each node and the other branch topped itself after like 6 or 7 nodes. Extra growth would be a Whorled Phyllotaxy mutation but not sure about when they self top.

Cool! There’s many plants even trees that will do, or have done that..

Yeah, I’d imagine it’s quite common in trees. It is in cannabis but not as much. I’ve grown around ~20 plants since I started and only 1 plant has ever shown that mutation.

Not sure of the technical names but this particular one’s main kinda turned into a half assed fan leaf and stalled for a few days then two new mains formed while the old main just looks like a weird fan leaf. Been growing pretty strong since.

Yeah it was probably just part of the mutation. Usually some other areas will be a little messed up too. And that one basically topping itself at birth definitely caused some weird things. I’ve noticed with a lot of things like that, more often than not the plants end up being very vigorous and healthy.
