What’s Wrong with my Seedlings?

    Hi everyone,

I’m growing Banana Purple Punch and Blackberry autoflowers in my SF-2000 tent. The seedlings are 8 days old and the Banana Purple Punch’s leaves seem a bit weirdly shaped, and have a spot of brown that started yesterday and a little yellow thats been there a few days. The Blackberry is pretty light green but seems to be maybe getting a little darker since I added a bit of grow fert to them last night. I was wondering why the Banana’s leaves look like that, if its a mutation, watering problem or a deficiency?

I’m afraid I watered them too much in the beginning. Last week I gave them each about 500ml water that had a little Cal-Mag in it over the course of 2 days. The seedlings are in a 5 Gal pot so I was thinking they may need more water than usual because I normally start in a smaller pot. I let them dry out for a couple days then did 200ml water per plant last night that had a tiny bit of 3-3-3 Grow fert. I have the plants on an 18-6 light cycle at 60% brightness and 1ft away from the lamp. Humidity is around 55-60% I had a humidity dome on them the first 3-4 days but then I wanted them to dry out more because of my over watering scare, so the domes have been mostly off the last couple days. I would like to add some Horsetail extract for silica to strengthen them some, but I don’t want to keep watering so I may wait on that. Any info would help I’m really counting on this grow to turn out well 🙂

Here’s how I setup for seedling stage, and does carry it into veg. I ammend soil with a baseline veg fertilizer. Soil already has mycorazae & silica in it. Then take a scoop out by hand & replace with unammended soil & castings. I place seed in wet paper towel until tap root develops, then plant. The Catalina leaves have enough nutrients in them already. If your soil has 0 nutrients in it, then disregard. BUT dont add any nutrients until 12-15 days or 2-3 nodes. First 2-3 waterings only get 20-30 ml of water. Once the seed has sprouted & standing up straight I remove dome for good. Cal mag is for deficiency. It’s way too early to use cal mag, & shouldn’t be used unless you recognize a calcium deficiency. Most fertilizer already has calcium/magnesium in it.

Hi thanks for your reply, the soil I used was from a previous grow that I sterilized because it had a fungus gnat problem. I added Mycorrhiza and perlite to the soil before I planted the seedling once it germinated. I had a Cal-mag deficiency in my last grow and heard you can never have too much, so figued it might be good to start it with a little bit. I won’t do that so early from now on. Should I still wait until day 12 to start doing fert, or since I may not have many nutrients in my soil from sterilizing it, should I maybe try and add something sooner to prevent deficiencies?

What water are you using? If it’s RO, stop and use plain filtered tap water if you can. I’m suspecting a PH problem. Do you use recharge or any other microbial support? did not see it or I over looked it if you are.

Hi, I’m using tap water which is pre-filtered here in Germany. Yeah makes sense that it could be a pH problem because the first time I watered I didn’t think to check the pH (been a while since the last grow and wasn’t back into my routine) but I used to always add a little lemon juice to my water because it was typically too basic. So I added a little lemon juice like always on the first watering. I checked my pH again before the next watering and it was pretty much perfectly 7 now, so I probably shouldn’t have added lemon juice on the previous watering. I don’t use recharge, it’s not available where I live I’m pretty sure. When I planted the seeds I dipped the pods into a micro-bacto water mix that was provided with the pods I bought, but since then I haven’t added any other microbial support.

Germany?! That’s awesome. I deployed to Stuttgart, Germany (Panzar Kasern in Boblingen) in 2010 and 2014. Had a freaking blast over there! I want to go back now that I’m a civilian and see what the cannabis scene is all about!! 7ph is a little high for my liking but if you’ve ran it that way before than that’s probably not your issue. Too bad I’m out now though, I’d snuggle in some recharge for you in our military gear customs doesn’t check 🤣🤣. I hope you get it figured out.

Frankfurt 72-75. I think drake kasern but my memory is not so good. Lots of hash among other things. I do agree though he’s a little early with nutrients. Find something with beneficials in it like worm castings. But recharge or stash blend will get you where you need to go. Don’t know what it’s like over there nowadays but it’s amazing what you can get through the mail.

Wait until you see second node before fertilizer. I’m assuming your using a liquid fertilizer ? If so use half dose first time. Full dose second time. Don’t add any cal mag as a preventative. ONLY if you see the deficiency. Cal mag also will kill much of your microbes. If your fertilizer doesn’t have the proper amount of calcium/magnesium, use gypsum. Gypsum will add it quickly, won’t kill your microbes, and can add it once a week. Build a Soil sells Gypsum, but I believe Down to Earth does as well. Anything else that supplies calcium to your plant, generally speaking will take time to become plant available. I use Dr Earth dry ammendment, which has the proper levels of cal/magnesium in it already, for both veg & bloom. My first year I had 0 deficiency using it.

Oh, your in Germany. If you can find gypsum, that’s your best option imo. Your tap water & fertilizer should have enough mag in it already

The seedling is too young to need any nutrition from the soil. The soil looks dry except for right around the seedling. It’s possible the tap root hit a dry spot and freaked out. When you transplant a seedling into a pot, always make sure to thoroughly water the entire pot. Depending on the size of the pot, it might not need watering for a week after transplant if you put it in a large pot. The seedlings tap root can grow several inches a day and hit the bottom of the pot within a week. If the any roots hit a dry spot in the media it will hurt and stunt the seedling. That’s what I see.
