Quick silly little question. What are the pros and cons of going from paper towels germination to a 5 gal grow bag as opposed to a SOLO cup to 3-5 gallon grow bags? And thank you guys for any answer you can provide.

Root mass is bigger when you up-pot a few times, in my experience. Bigger roots, bigger fruits.

Restrict the roots and you restrict the stalk’s thickness, Only relevant variable of a stem in relation to yield is girth. Height is irrelevant.

A solo cup builds a compact root system and most importantly will drink the water in the cup every day or 2. This let’s the soil dry back a little and stimulates new root growth. Too big of a container will stay wet for days and the roots can rot.

@scottyreal basically the cup is training wheels for people that don’t know how to water a small plant or a placebo for people that think how much they “love” their plant is how good or how much yield they will get. If you know what your doing it actually only introduces more risk for injury to the plant than any benefits.

One important thing to note: Autos may do better going straight from germination to the 5 gal. I’ve now read this in multiple grow bibles.

@GuppyGirl that’s the reason I ask. I have read that several times.

@GuppyGirl I’ve done both, they can be transplanted but you can’t wait as long as you can to transplant a photo or else it will start to flower earlier and dramatically reduce yield.
