Curious about your experiences using 5 gallon vs 3 gallon for autos specifically.

My next grow will be indoors, in coco using recharge/grow dots/worm castings/biochar but can’t decide on pot size

I’ve heard when the auto’s taproot hits the bottom it triggers flowering immediately, seems like a 5 gallon will let it veg longer?

Anyone tried using really tall narrow pots with autos?

I am normally a photo guy but temporarily need to harvest in less than 90 days

I would use the 5 before 3 gallon. More root zone space, and wont dry out as fast. I have done fabric pots and 5 gallon buckets. The taller pots did get farther node spacing for me.

Besides the obvious factors like genetics and environment, root mass is a yield limiting factor. More roots equals more potential yield.

The taproot bottoming out isn’t the only thing that can induce flowering too early. Too much of any stress could do it. 98% of what I grow are auto’s. I use 5 and 3 gallon pots and haven’t noticed any difference in yield. Although I haven’t run the same strain twice in a row, they’ve all come out to around 2.5-3.5+ ounces per plant. And they’ll stay in veg for almost 30 days or more.

Worrying about the tap root hitting the bottom is more for if you’re starting in smaller container and transplanting up. More or less, 3 or 5 gallon is sorta personal preference or if space is an issue.

Also, the roots can definitely fill out a 3 gallon. But even small plants can pack on some real flower density. If space isn’t an issue or anything, then I’d just go with 5 gallons. I’m running my Purple Lemonade auto in 5 gallon air pots, in coco

Thanks, I’m limited to a 2×4 right now and want to do 3 plants. One of them I want to let get as big as she can (gorilla cookies) so she goes in the 5 gallon, the two others get 3 gallon pots because they are mystery seeds. I think it will be ok as I am high desert low humidity. I’ve even thought about running six 3 gallons and keeping them smaller just for variety because I have all these mystery seeds.

I’ve got a gorilla cookies going now in mid flower in 3gal fabric pots with biflower365 soil, cronk nutrients, mini sun 2 320w LED, in a 2×4 tent , I have 3 3gal pots in there now and I don’t think I could fit another unless it was a solo cup lol, when they start bushing out it gets tight
